Forums - Sony - Is the PS3 REALLY having shortages or is it sony's excuse 4 bad sales?

This year so far VGChartz has the PS3 at 6,730,000 consoles sold.
This year so far, VGChartz has the 360 as 5,170,000 consoles sold.

All of last year, including the holiday season, the 360 sold 7,880,000 consoles.

For the month of September thus far, the 360 has outsold the PS3 by 90,000 with global price cuts.(not including America this week.) 451,000 to 543,000

All of September last year (not including the 1st and 30th) The PS3 sold 328,000 consoles.

So, IMO, the PS3 is doing just fine right now. They have still sold more this year up to this point than any Microsoft console ever has, and they are doing that at a $400 price point. At the rate the PS3 is going, 80,000,000 sold lifetime is not unreachable, especially when they do drop price.

well, people are always only reading what they want to read

still, I was a bit surprised, that I didn't see a single PS3 in our Saturn (a big electronics retailer here in germany) in Mainz, when I bought Yakuza 2 two weeks ago

Saturn? Are they still good value there in Germany? Here in Italy they are opening a lot of megastores , but after the crazy launch offers they aren't attractive anymore, Unieuro, Euronics and MediaWorld(=MediaMarkt) are far more attractive (*), usually. And I hate Saturn and MediaWorld policy of selling only Intel powered desktops and notebooks, again, selling AMD too, Unieuro and Euronics normally have far more appealing and various offers.

(*) I omitted Trony because, at least here, they go bankrupt each other day, then the brand is bought by somebody else and they start again, right now, unlike their competitors, they don't have anymore a store in Genoa, but in a small town lost in the mountains

Maybe, but there are two more issues.

1. They lost a lot of money already, to increase production capacity would require investment in capital. It probably isn't worth it or there'd be plenty of PS3's. (This is the same reason Nintendo is really slow to increase production)

2. There is no guarantee that demand will still be there. As the third place console, Sony is playing it safe. They may be the first to see a decrease in demand.

i  think they are trying to adopt as fast as possible to any option they get to produce ps3 cheaper so they are not producing much more than their planned sales to be able to see gains from cheaper new model revisions faster.

if you jsut keep up with demand and not stockpile you can cut unneded costs a lot, if they had 5 million ps3 on stock with 90nm rsx at the time of the switch to 65nm then they would have lost more money on these 5 million sku than needed, so best stay close to demand and don't build stocks to be able to be as cost effective as possible.

This is why I qualified what the situation in the U.S. is like.  It's not really a shortage, they just aren't all over the place.

We don't disagree as much as we are just using different words.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I know the retail chain where I am employed is having a lot of trouble getting enough PS3s. It's not terribly hard to find but we do sell out.

Saturn and Media Markt belong to the same company - "Metro Group"

that's why they are absolutely the same just with a different color - well, and they have different bargains for the week (although "bargains" at those retailers usually are still more expensive then buying from online retailers)

to answer your question:
no, they usually aren't good value, but it's nice to have a look at the new TV sets etc

^^
Oh, this explains a lot of things... Every now and then I still find some good offers at them, but they are rarer than in the past.

Naw, haven't had real shortages since the end of July or so.

You do know that if they cut the prices by $100 there is a chance that the sharholders won't take the ammount of money lost and decide to shut down the Sony games division.
