RPGFan has translated the prologue:
http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2008/1445.html
The game's background story begins with a king discovering a shrine located in a remote mountain range. Inside the ancient structure he obtains a new source of power known as "soul." The prosperity brought upon the country by this new power did not last long, though. Seeking even greater power, the king returned to the shrine. There he woke up an ancient beast which unleashed a colorless fog and demons. The fog, which had quickly covered the entire land, cut off the country's connections to the outside world. Meanwhile, the demons began to rob the people of their souls and eat them. Two decades later, the people are clinging to one last hope.
Demon's Souls will be available in Japan sometime next year.

I think this crossover will create something far more interesting than JRPGS or WRPGS, both of which genres I have begun to lose interest in. Kings Field also focused on exploration and that has me jazzed up as well, cause the only thing that makes exploration a chore is a shitty boring worlds which these screens indicate is probably not the case. |
Would you be interested in a Western developed JRPG? That would be east meets west, wouldn't it?

Quite. Especially if they could peg the artstyle I would( I love the foreign feel of the eastern mythological imagery). WRPGS tend to offer me so many options I get frustrated and intimidated(there are of course exceptions to every rule). JRPGS tend to feel a little too predictable (see above parenthetical). WRPGS in my opinion have a little less character because of freedom, while sometimes JRPGS fall into far too archetypal characters. I hope that the crossover will help find a delicate balance in freedom and linearity, character and sponteneaty.

There were hundreds of ruins and dungeons to explore, but they all looked the same (either a tomb or a dungeon or a cave). Very cookie cutter. Hopefully this game spends a lot more time actually crafting the world instead of Bethesda's copy and paste method. People also hated the leveling system. Having enemies level with you is stupid. Also, the level up system was retarded. Depending on what skills you set as your major/minor skills, it was very easy to get either way underpowered or ridiculously overpowered. Hopefully this game does a MUCH better job with that. Last, the graphics in Oblivion plain old SUCKED. They looked great as a screenshot, but the minute ANYTHING moved, it looked like utter crap with some of the worst animations in a modern game. I've never played King's Field, so I have no idea really what to expect. But the very little I've seen has me pretty interested. I love the art style so far, especially the new screens just posted. I really hope that this one turns out great. |
absolutely correct
Oblivion loocked very good in screenshots, but after some hours of game time you realize that it just doesn't matter where you are, because everywhere looks exactly the same and feels exactly the same, because they let a computer programm create the "huge world" by random .. what a bad design decision
hand crafted worlds are far more interesting, so I hope this one is atleast 70-80% hand-crafted
and ofcourse the level system in Oblivion is redicules, it actually penelizes you for leveling your main skills, while you get very very strong if you just level your side skills (which won't make you level up -> the enemies stay weak)
if Demons Soul's doesn't have these flaws and only the strength of Oblivion and of JRPGs, then it will be a very good game
