Rumors - $399 40gig PS3 Coming Soon, FFXIII Could be Delayed Until Late 08, PS3 Achievements

The latest edition of Game Informer magazine finally hit the stands. It contains quiet a lot of juicy new information. They have an exclusive first look at an upcoming game called "Prototype" which is due out on the PS3/360 next year. Details will be published soon.

According Game Informer magazine, a $399 40gig PS3 system is on the way, but it will have no backwards compatibility. They actually expected to hear the announcement at E3 on it. So they may have just heard different rumblings altogether.

FF XIII: Word is the game is a mess right now and the localization process is expected to take a year. The game will not come out in Japan until the end of 08. And finally PS3 Achievements will be available in games coming out this Holiday season will have them. Similar to the 360 where an achievement notice pops up. Not sure if 3rd parties will be required to do the same.

even though i doubt this rumor is true... why keeping shipping ps3's with different sku's?? just ship the dam things without harddrives and all that other extra crap and let people buy their own add ons..... FFXIII rumor is probably true... and the ps3 achievements i think everyone already knows about.. if you dont know about it then yes the ps3 is getting an achievement system just like the 360... its getting achievements plus trophies.. plus home.. so it should be a really cool time for ps3 owners

a 40 gb cost more than a 80gb
and the backward compatibility is already emulate in Europe and in the future 80gb for NA. I dont think that dropping the emulation system will help them droping the price (not even 0.5$)

and what is these "achievements" ?

And a 100 GB PS3 for $699. And a 120 GB PS3 for $799. You know you want them.

These sound like ... terrible rumors.

A PS3 with no Backwards Compatibility?

FFXIII not till Holiday 08 in Japan?!? (wouldn't that make it an early 09 NA release, and late 09 for EU?)

I fart in the general direction of these rumors ... cause they stink.

Given the Software emulation BC is on firmware 1.8 I really don't understand what they are talking about when they say Sony are dropping it with this new SKU.

If I read the other topics correctly, the Backwards Compatibility still costs Sony a bit of money even without the EE, because the GS is still included. But these rumours stink, that's for sure.

touching back on the 1st rumor though... i dont think this rumor is true.. if anything just offer the 60 gig at 399... i think they will lower the price of 80 gig since they can afford to do so now whenever they choose to.. they should just offer the 80 gig at a reduced price.. if they take away motorstorm that should bring the price down to 550.. the BC chip is taken out so that reduces it down to 500... diode blu ray lasers have been in full blown production so that should lower the cost anywhere from 50 to 100 less.. so they could sell the 80 gig anywhere from 399 to 449 if they wanted to..if im correct they would only be losing around 150 on each console sold thats a step up from losing 250 to 300 on each console sold..

Anyone that expected FFXIII before 09' in America are just crazy. It's probably going to be mid 09' before we see it.

 No hard drive is just a bad idea to begin with. Especially when they're trying to push things like DLC and such, not to mention the firmware and game updates. 

As for the rumor itself, I find it kind of funny. If they would want to have a cheap system sans some features on the market, I think the 20gig was perfect for that. Not only could you replace the hard drive if you ran out of space, but you can also get around the lack of memory card slots by transfering things via your USB flash drive from your PC. Then, coupled with the things they've implemented to cut costs such as the laser diodes, Emotion Engine, and other improvements to the hardware (ex, 65nm CPU), it would be perfect for a low cost unit without all the other features.
