I dunno, Both games seem to have taken a bit of jump out of other FF's shadows, FFxiii has a female lead, and vs has what seems like a very dark story.

I just wonder if people would be saying the same if SE had given vs to MS instead. ;x

Are you familiar with the fable of the Fox and the Grapes? You may need to consider the possibility that you just want Versus to be better because you want the PS3 to have an exclusive to replace Final Fantasy XIII.

 I think that Versus in this context is being used in the context of music when you have a remix of a track and they sometimes say X Versus Y....

So it just means Final Fantasy XIII remixed...

Which from all accounts would explain completely its naming...

I'm not sure if you should buy it though for that. That would be like a PS3 owner saying this game is going to be better because its got the "exclusive" tag on it.
