This was one of the few moments in the debate that actually surprised me. What do you think of McCains idea to freeze spending on everything except military/veterans?

For a short time this may be a good solution. Of course it makes more sense to slash spending on some things and raise it on others this may often not be possible. Clear rules like spending may not increase are in these cases often better.

I like his plan to stop all earmarks much more though. This is a terrible idea to do lawmaking anyway. It will not stop lawmakers from making deals behind curtains (you vote for my law, I vote for yours) but it makes it much harder.

The NTUF's candidate cost analysis project discovered that McCain's proposals would increase federal spending by about $100 billion. McCain's freeze on non-defense, non-veterans discretionary spending would save taxpayers $15 billion. The study included candidates McBama and Barr.
