Forums - Sony - Yoshida: PS3's lack of fortunes in Japan is "mainly a software thing"

The software(s) will be here soon.

I remember when PS3 fanboys promised 2007 would be the year to look forward to for the PS3.

On vghartz alone there was a "20 reasons to have a PS3 in 2007" thread and less than half of the games were released in 2007. In fact, many of them haven't even been released yet.

That man is on a roll, I got a good laugh at him blaming the PS3 failures in general (though in context of this probably just Japan) on Japanese developers not being up to par on developing on the PS3 or not having enough of them, he did is in such a friggin amazingly diplomatic way that I couldn't stop laughing. He was basically saying that it's the developers fault and not Sony's.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Official Huge Monster Hunter Thread:

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

Does anyone one know any major title that caters to the japanese being announced other than WKC?

The gape between WTC and FFXIII will be pretty big and if there is NOTHING in between them that appeals to the Japanese market then Sony is in big trouble.

From rumours around GT is a late 09 early 2010 release and lord knows when GoW3 is gonna hit retail.

Lets hope some of those unannounced blockbuster can plug Sony's leaking hole until FFXIII arrives.

In a way, WKC really is Sony's White Knight of Japan, without it Sony would have nothing to show its Japanese install base this Xmas holiday.

I agree. Outside of MGS4 and HSG5, the only popular series in Japan to have been released on the platform thus far have been DMC4, a Yakuza spinoff, and Dynasty Warriors, the latter of which still usually hits the ps2 at some point.

No.

The problem in Japan, is that *all* of the really popular software for the PS2 has already been released - with the exception of Final Fantasy (and DQ, but they are likely to never get DQ on the PS3).

All of the biggest titles have been and gone - and while some of them sold "ok" - very few ignited hardware in a meaningful way.

I really doubt they will ever get the critical mass of software on the PS3 than they did on the PS2 - the PS2/Wii are both still popular (and selling a lot of software), and they are much easier to develop for than the PS3 (which is risky & costly).

And to make matters worse, the 360 is nibbling away at both software and hardware - if MS actually manage to fix their supply issues, they could have a sustained run of outselling the PS3.

...

Their only hope is a significant price reduction of the PS3, combined with the release of a couple of big guns - say FFXIII & GT5 - at the same time. Then have enough support to keep the ball rolling.

And to be brutally honest - software sales on the PS3 plain out suck - its entering its 3rd Xmas in Japan, and ONE title has broken the 500k barrier. Now that the PSP has had some big titles, the PS3 is taking the crown as the "sucky software seller".

All?

You are quite mistaken, my friend.  First there are the two biggest ps2 franchises in Japan, which you've already mentioned: FF and DQ.

Then there's the juggernaut that is Gran Turismo.  And I'm talking the *REAL* Gran Turismo.  Not Prologue.

Then there are smaller titles like Tekken 6 and the actual Yakuza 3 (not that spinoff Kenzan).  And then there are franchises that may not hit the ps3 at all, like Tales and Star Ocean (Tales of Vesperia will likely get ported akin to Eternal Sonata, but Star Ocean 4 is less of a certainty, and even if they were ported, the timed exclusivity would hinder any help they coul providealso  the ps3).

There's also the lack of JRPGs in general.  So far, in almost 2 years, the ps3 has only gotten two late ports (Enchanted Arms, Eternal Sonata), two SRPGs (Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles), and the only "big" JRPG they'll be getting in the near future is White Knight Chronicles.

I think Wii faces the same exact problem. There is practically no support as of right now for the System in terms of JRPG's (Tales of Symphonia 2, but that doesn't really count).

For some odd reasons, despite being the least successful, Xbox 360 is getting the most JRPG's, I wonder how they managed that?

Eh, Sony has been harping on how important their own first party is lately that I think it's just as much a knock on themselves as it is third parties.

Tbh, when I first read the OP I immediately thought about how long WKC has taken to finish, and how much longer GT5 has to go.

Not too hard to figure out.

MS was most likely in talks with companies like Namco and such shortly after the 360 launched. I mean for example ToV development started in 2006. Likely the same with Eternal Sonata. Considering it was the first console out and the PS3/Wii wouldn't launch for a year it's not too surprising it got support.

The PS3 is suffering because most of the RPGs it's getting are big so they needed A LOT of time to develop.

The Wii is suffering because the Wii was fated to lose. That was wrong and it got late support. If you look at Onimusha's Wii game list, there's a lot of RPGs hitting it in 2009 and who knows what else will be announced. We can also add Inazuma Eleven and that Nino-game from Level 5 becasue those are obvious Wii games. Most likely 2009 releases for both, especiall Inazuma. From here on out there'll be more RPG announcements for it as time passes.

It's called moneyhatting. Being first to the market only means so much. Dreamcast was first and the only major 3rd party RPG I can think of that it got was Grandia II. If Sega was passing out moneyhats for RPGs I'm sure they would have gotten more before the console died.

PS3 is suffering because outside of FFXIII no one is bringing any major RPGs to it. So far it's getting low profile titles and ports of 360 bombs from companies I'm prety sure werre expecting it to sell better.

Wii isn't really suffering. In the past year there's been about 5-7 RPGs announced with more to come at TGS. The only thing you could really say about those games is that they're not high profile SE games, but when SE is tying all of its major titles to sinking consoles it's not really a surprise.

Tag - "No trolling on my watch!"

People fell for Emotion Engine hype. Many learned the CELL may be in the same category.

Hardware and software need a certain balance. PS3 is certainly lacking in software so the hardware won't be selling much. Obviously obvious.

When a CEO say the obvious, s/he makes the news. For the rest of us, we're just rambling crazy fans.
