I'm not using Linux on a PS3 (I don't own one) but I have Linux running as my primary desktop (I'm writing this on Ubuntu Feisty right now)

It will be completely free and also you will be able to download any open source software completely free (I've never used Yellow Dog but I'm sure it comes with the standards, Gaim, Openoffice, etc. Most of the software the average person uses all the time)

just download and install. But there's really not too much benifit from what I see, you'd be better off running it on your PC.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

This is a pretty informative piece.

It's free. I installed it, but it used an old kernel which wasn't compatible with my DiNovo Edge keyboard. I have Ubuntu on it right now, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting the Cell SDK to work.

dude for the best linux help the guys on my site's forums http://ps3forums.com has a great section that will help with linux, they helped me fix an installation bug I had with YDL, but if I were you id install Fedora 6. its cooler =]

That's pretty much it. Just a different look. Google up some screenshots and see which one best fits your fancy.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

I would suggest you install Ubuntu if you are new to Linux.

I'd suggest Ubuntu then - it's the most polished distribution for typical users, unless you plan on working with the Cell SDK. If you're working with the Cell SDK, you'll have to use YDL or Fedora.

Ubuntu uses a newer kernel than YDL or Fedora, so the hardware support is better. For example, the WiFi in the PS3 works in Ubuntu, but not in YDL. Personally, I have a bluetooth keyboard that was not supported with YDL (Logitech DiNovo Edge - trackpad is unsupported in YDL kernel) that works fine in Ubuntu.

As of this point, AFAIK, you can't just build a new kernel as you normally would on a PC. (So, don't try to update the kernel, unless you're know you're getting a PS3 specific one!)

That contains bootable iso images and instructions.
