In what ways are they obsolete? Start-up times? Quality?

They are obsolete because the first Blu-Ray players were designed, manufactured and released before the Blu-Ray spec was complete and the only Blu-Ray player on the market that can be upgraded is the PS3 ...

We don't (really) know what the consequences of having a player that isn't the latest and greatest spec, but I suspect that in the future some discs won't play while others have different problems.

****, thanks for taking the wind out of my sales.  Why the **** would they release something that would not play movies in the future?

it will play movies.. just certain features are missing. Like for instance. The game where you can shoot the aliens and predators in alien vs predator blu ray.

I highly doubt a movie wouldn't be able to play.

Profile 2.0 things are just an addition of stuffz

This.  Certain features weren't finalized for early Bluray players, like BD-J.  Movies will play fine.  But certain features might not.

Isn't this bad news for the PS3?

Nope.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Blu-ray sales aren't too good. It may have beaten HD-DVD but that doesn't mean it will dominate like DVD.

But it says that you can update the firmware by burning the update on a cd or asking for a cd from the manufacturer. Wouldn't this update to the firmware allow the BD-Java?

Hey as long as there is something to cater to the HD enthusists and it's worth the investment of the content provider, both parties are happy.  Apparently, sales are good enough to keep pushing Blu-ray, dominating or not.

The best thing you can do in this situation is to visit www.sonystyle.com.  The site or a number on the site you can call should help you.

This player can of course execute BD-Java. Just google "firmware update" for the model and read. You'd probably get a player with firmware 4.20 now if you bought one.
