@Dark Odin: I remember your comment about this :) I think you were the one who initially proposed the idea. I didn't forget about it, I've just been thinking it over and have been slowly working on it. Thanks again for the idea!
KylieDog said: Nice idea Arcturus. I would probably question the ratings of some of those plats though. Also, does time factor in to a platinum? For example Fallout 3 you can get the plat playing on very easy, is pretty much no challenge to it like that but it would take a good amount of hours to do all the quests still. Resistance 2 also, meeting trophy requirements isn't very hard but 10k kills in multiplayer is very time consuming. Another odd example is Fifa 09, techinically the trophies are pretty easy except for 1 trophy which requires 20 people working together at once to get it...when trophies got patch it was a nightmare to organise and now that Fifa 10 is out I have no idea where would find enogh people to try and get that trophy, making it easy to earn but at the same time very hard to get. How does that factor in to ratings? |
Pretty hard to take into account the time it takes when people try to boost their way around the time consuming stuff...

I've tried to factor in the amount of time required to earn a platinum as part of the difficulty factor, as well as the difficulty of earning certain trophies. I'd file the Fifa 09 example as added difficulty to earning the platinum.
I haven't played many of the games in the list so I had to go by the general impressions people had on achieving the platinum. These are rough guesses as to what the difficulty may be for each game.
KylieDog said: Also, does using a guide to find collectables factor in to ratings? Like for example if you can just use a guide does that mean it is easy? What about boosting with a partner to earn things online? Does the possibility make a game count as being easy? |
Unfortunately, if it's very easy to earn a platinum by referencing a guide, or by boosting with a partner online, than I would tend to rate a game as being more easy. I know this isn't ideal.
The only one that struck me as odd was Batman at 3. I'd vote 2 but who knows.
I propose a 5th star for a few select games, such as:
Warhawk
Guitar Hero Metallica
Guitar Hero Smash Hits
Guitar Hero Van Halen
I know very few people have Warhawk, and I would be surprised if anyone had any of those 3 GH's. They are asymptotic with impossible.
Granted, none of us have any of those platinums, but maybe that would invoke people to try harder?

5 stars should be Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and White Knight Chronicles ( noone in the world has either at this point :P).

thanks arcturus! :)
I think that about the rating thing, it´s always something that can be discussed and then changed if necessary by the people in the league who played the game. but I really liked the way that arcturus arranged the stars/rating now. and very clever the scale from one to four stars, it helps avoiding futures unnecessary discussions about minor changes in the difficult.
about what kyllie said, I think that the platinums who takes more "skill" than time or other things, are the ones that must be considered the more harder to get. like street fighter 4, wipeout, mirror´s edge, etc.
But of course that we know about some games that takes forever to get a platinum, and these deservers a 4 stars also. Like warhawk, SOCOM, cross edge, etc.
And let´s not forget the online factor... GTA IV would be a platinum that many people would have if there were no online trophies. Like resistance 2 also..
In other cases we have a mix of these factors. So I believe that´s not about making (I´m not saying that someone said this hehe) a pattern for "rate the platinum dificcult", and more about analysing each game. Like for example, everybody here knows that the online trophies for Lord of the rings are really hard to get, but also everybody knows that with a boosting partner, you can get all them in some hours (we have 14 platinums here). Any person who played fallout 3 and found all bobblehead, knows... without a guide, you´d take forever to find them and get the platinum in the game. But, we have 36 people with it, so keep thinking "but fallout is a very hard platinum if you don´t use a guide..." c´mon! keep discussions about "he can play without/with using a guide or he did/didn´t the online trophies alone, etc" are waste of time IMHO...
ps.: I´m just predicting what some people will say
and ps2.: marcio is a trophy whore who will get owned in the next COD
KylieDog said: Factoring in what you said about time/boosting/guides I disagree with these ratings. For reference - Game name - Your rating / My rating Batman: Arkham Asylum - 3 / 2 (Since only real challenge is the challenge combat rooms...and only 2 of them are real bothers) Bionic Commando - 3 / 2 (It really isn't that hard on Commando difficulty) Bioshock - 3 / 2 (Can be done in 1 run if you want using a guide with a very protecting save system) Dead Space - 2 / 1 (2 runs and can use infinite stasis cheat to make Impossible a cakewalk, though it isn't that bad anyway) Killzone 2 - 4 / 3 (You can boost the online easily so just requires a bit of time and Elite really isn't hard) LittleBigPlanet - 3 / 2 (Requires time and some effort to either make good level and keep republishing it or hounding the internet for hearts) Mirror's Edge - 3 / 2 (Isn't very hard, only 2 speed runs are a bother and using a guide you can find some great shortcuts to make them not so bad...and just requires you do not cock up jumps) Pure - 2 / 1 (I don't actually have the plat but I'm just on the brink of it, not challenging and not very time consuming if you go for the 42 win trophy first playthrough) Sonic Unleashed - 4 / 3 (Only some hotdog missions are challenging, other than that just requires time, I don't have the plat for this either though) Wet - 2 (This is not listed, so my word is law! :p ) |
Problem with downgrading some of those games is that then Killzone 2 would be a lot harder to get than others 3, and Mirror Edge a lot harder than most others 2....( for example you have quite a few people that can plat Uncharted but wouldn't be able to plat Mirror Edge, not everyone has good coordination to make all the jumps required..)
PS : there's more people than you know that if they fail doing something 10-15 times in a video game will just give up.
After looking at the list and kyliedog's suggestions, I think a 1-5 scale would work better. Not too much flexibility, but not to restricted either.
