Well, 6 of the last 8 years they were in and they ballooned the debt. Totally. Many republicans even admit this! They don't like it either. Bush's policies which were helped by his congress, spent money like candy.

I would love to have a job where I could be doing it for two years, be completely ineffective, and take no responsibility for it.

THe biggest problem is you have two schools of thought. The Conservative philosophy is to collect less taxes, and spend less. The liberal philosophy is to collect more taxes and spend more.

Once you start spending, it's very hard in this country to stop it. We have billions of dollars in programs that should be cut (including parts of the military) that politicians are afraid to cut. So it's virtually impossible to put a conservative program in place.

The #1 issue with the country is spending, and we are about to shell out 700 billion more dollars. When will it ever end?

I have no idea when it ends, but it is blatantly clear that it will not end if we put the GOP back into power. I see the passage of the NCLB of 2001 as one of the signs that the Republican party has fundementally changed. Not only was it an ineffective mess, but it flew in the face of everything conservatives stand for on education. There are now very few Republicans for whom I will vote.

I agree. In fact I agree with McCain that Education is this centuries civil rights movement. I also think thy way you "fix" it is to abolish the department of education.

The top private schools in this country cost around $14,000 a year. Most cost $2,500 - $4,000 a year. Any of these are light years ahead of public schools. In my state, we collect $20,000 a student in taxes for public education.

That would be fine if, 1. They got a great education for it, and 2. It was our federal governments job to run education.

Before the federal government got involved, we had better schools. Now they want to fix a problem they causes by doing more of what causes the problem.

Gah, I need to go to bed. I hate it all.

I agree we need to abolish the Dept. of Education. Federal involvement in education is unconstitutional. The only exceptions being when the federal government is granted powers in a certain area that may effect education. An example of this would be enforcing the 14th Amendment. What concerns me about McCain is that he voted for the NCLB Act of 2001. That shows me that he is not prepared to end federal involvement in education.
