I found the Second session very disappointing compared to the first...
Former something....
It was alright. It was excellent until L died, but then after that everything went down hill.

The suspense wasn't the same, the tricks were different, and just overall they didn't have the drawing/charm of L. The anime would have been beyond amazing if the episode with L's death was the last one, and by amazing I mean instantly the top anime to grace this world to date.

This...... After L died it was pretty much predictable, and just dragged on. I liked light until he started killing innocent people(FBI Agents, Ray's(?) wife), and started to use people (Misa,Rem-RIP). Then I knew he had to die. Though its kind of sad how Misa is alone now.
If you liked that you might want to look into Code Geass...So much manipulation...

Didn't that happen in like... episode 10 or something? It was pretty early on, after they got together in the hotel room basically almost. Or maybe I'm forgetting the progression of events, it's been a while.

Before L it was great. It was okay during Near's arc (the last two episodes were awesome though). But L & Light was definitely the highlight of the series.
Also watch director's cut immediately. There are a few new scenes you DON'T want to miss ^__^
I love Deathnote too but I love Light hes so twisted if he wasn't evil he'd be a good guy. I've seen the Live action Movies and it was pretty good not complettly faithful to the Anime but is an appropriate adaption I liked it alot despite the dubbing.
I'm going to the anime festival this weekend in NYC though I'm still an anime Noob.
Oh and where did you watch all these episodes if it was online could you give me a link.....
I don't know if you've seen Gungrave but I highly recommend it to you. For an anime based off a game all I have to say is that there should be more transitions if they are as good as this one. Watching everything fit the way it does is really cool.
