yes but if it were mandatory then you'll still get a lot of people that will start building their score up on the ps3 and become dedicated ps3 gamers. Acheivements - although unimportant to me is a way to get avid gamers dedicated to one title and should be made mandatory by Sony in my opinion.

2009.

The only reason why it's not mandatory now, is because the tools arrived too late for some devs to add them. The months before the holidays are probably when the programmers are going to over-time sleep-in-office mode. They need to worry about the actual game for adding misc stuff. By 2009, expect every PS3 game to have trophy support and custom soundtracks.
