Forums - Gaming - what battle system did u like the most from a rpg?

I´m loving ToV battle system, but one I loved back in the day was Grandia for the Playstation 1.

It was semi-turn-based and semi-real-time. I wish ganes would copy it or improve on it.

Tales series for me. But I also really like turn based games also.

Tales series in general. Battle systems are awesome.

This. Pokemon is second(The only turn based combat system that I like.)

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Chrono Trigger, followed closely by Vagrant Story

....and I'll look down and whisper  "no."

The Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale) have the best battle system to ever grace an RPG, and you simply cannot tell me otherwise.

All of you people saying a bunch of "you and the enemies stand in a row and press X to enter canned attack animation" games must really hate gameplay.

My thoughts exactly... I really don´t know how people get satisfaction from turn based rpg... but to each their own...

Infinity Engine forever :)

The Mario & Luigi and Pokemon ones

Pokemon!!!

Nah, jk

Baldurs Gate, for sure

For standard RPG, Chrono Cross. It really mixes things up, and though I don't like the way it uses random chance for attack accuracy, I do love the attack/Element system in essence. Having an actual balance between the value of melee and magic combat that's inherent in the system's design is just brilliant.

For action RPGs, I must admit that Star Ocean 2 was my darling for a long time. The combination of free-roam AND lock-on targeting was an irresistible lure to me. But it recently got taken out of that lofty position by Tales of the Abyss, which does it even better than SO2 and adds the ability to dodge spells (yeah, how many RPGs let you do THAT?).

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Turn based with timing, like in smrpg and Lost Odyssey.

-UBISOFT BOYCOTT!-

Xenosaga 1, Dark Cloud 2, and Grandia 3
