Forums - Gaming - games are starting to become dull

I feel you. I haven't played a decent game since last year. Nothing good has come out since I beat MP3, RE4, Portal, and BioShock (which I saidly did withint 4 weeks of each other). I've been playing oldies like Warcraft 3 and maybe some Diablo II and UT2004 right now. With all the Halos and Gears and the Soul Caliburs and the Metal Gears, etc. and all those companies aiming at the current HD platforms it seems like the only games that are mildly interesting nowadays come from Blizzard and Valve. They keep the polish and the originality/innovation up enough for me to play through their games a few times and play them online for a while afterwards. I'm just hoping the trend keeps for the next few years while their big titles are coming out otherwise I might just stop playing games. The Wii games have yet to bore me, though that's probably because I only have about 7 of them, all 5 from the top 5 and a few random ones. It's just that they aren't as fun alone, or they are just not great for more than 1 playthrough.

I totally feel you. However youre not broken, todays games are. They are mainly repetive and have no replay value or just about anything in them. How can I know that nowadays games are broken? Well, I tried some old games(emulator + old system) that I haven't played yet and they offer me much more than new games. However there are some 'new' games that can offer something, but those are mainly indie games on PC.

Some examples:

Dwarf fortress, graphics = ascii, stuff in game = more than enough

Mount & blade
Not still a full game, but has already nice immersive battles and simple medieval politics.

The thing is both of those games don't have story, which you have to follow. Therefore you can do whatever you want to do. I think games today are way too strictly story driven that you can only play them like you watch movies(Play once and you have seen everything.).
