Forums - Sales - First day sales in Japan (7/12)

This game may have very long legs because of the Wii shortage. Consider that people who do not yet have a Wii but want this game may have to wait. If a game comes out that would normally sell consoles on a console that is habitually sold out, it will sell consoles over a long period. So a larger-than-normal percentage of the new consoles will have that game attached.

For a quick point of reference. These were the Gamecube's top 2 selling third party games in Japan

That... Is actually pretty horrible!... Luckily DQS will top this in its 2nd/3th week if everything goes according to 'normal' sales (1st week ~320k... 2nd week 50% decline... then ~35% decline Etc)

THE NETHERLANDS

I think that this is very encouraging. I don't know SE's sales estimation but DQS is very probably above their numbers.

Hopefully this will prompt them and other developers to put full, more complex games on the Wii rather than a compilation of mini games.

Yea i really hope the 3rd party line up this year will sell well so we can continue looking forward to other 3rd party titles rather than just the usual nintendo franchises.

Erik has it right. This is very big if DQS can manage 700k+, as it's the first major full-price Wii game.

For the Wii to really do well, it has to shed the image of budget price Wii titles like Sports/Play, and begin to embrace the standard priced games that did well last generation. Should DQS have a decent normal multiplier, it spells good news. However, the worry could be that it ends up like a real Dragon Quest game, sells great 1st week, and bombs the next.

Dragon Quest: Joker did pretty well. Sold around 600k first week (most of the entire shipment), 1m in the first month - and is now up to 1.5m 24 weeks later.

I am probably just overly optimistic - but I expect DQ:S to reach 1m fairly easily (may take 25-30 weeks though). Seems to me to be the perfect "game" for the Wii, and something that should appeal to the Japanese market.

Doesn't hurt that its a DQ branded title either.

Time will tell ;)

The top third party N64 games sold even less.

Of course SF, DQ and FF were huge on SNES in Japan.

So that will make DQ:S the top selling third party game on a Nintendo home console in over a decade.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

You're right. That really was poor.

It really is interesting. There's never been a console to reclaim success for a company. Sega did improve their marketshare quite a bit with the Genesis, but it was nothing like this.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

DQS (Wii) : (a little) more than 200k (200~210k?)

Awesome!

I was cautiously hoping for 100k-150k, but 200k is great. First shipment will definitely sell out (or close) for week#1. This also means we don't really know just how strong the demand for this really is.

I think this will easily hit the 1m level before the end of the year. It might be at the 500k level within 2 weeks.

Famitsu's review tried hard to hide the fact that this title is repetitive and short by giving it 8 or 9 out of 10 (for anyone that bothered to read their comments rather than just glance at the score).

There are going to be a ton of used copies hitting the shelves, and this will probably put a swift end to the long-term sales of this title.
