this kid is going to get sued for patent infringment by some company for usng a 3d modell or something else ridicioulous if his invention works.

Now the world is weird  and people take Prozac  to make it normal.

To be fair by the age of 12 I had already built two robots (one of them could walk ). And I have often thought that solar panels are criminally innefficient because they don't use as much surface area as could potentially be used.

This kid is just like me... except he is smart.

Edit: I once built a solar powered RC car, but it was crap

I compare minor things I've done to super geniuses all the time to make myself feel better too.

On topic here.... WOOT!  My plan in life is to build a house that's 100% off the system.  Advances like this make it even more feasible. :)  Hopefully his numbers are correct and someone picks this up for mass production. :D

When I was twelve all I invented was a suoerhuman android :/

How did he solve the real problems of Solar Energy: Storage and AC conversion?

AC conversion is solved by inverters I believe.

Storage is not a solar energy problem... it's an energy problem. I don't think anyone proposes having an all-solar grid anyway.

This is good but the real problem with solar cells is manufacturing cost not light absorbtion efficiency !
They are allready expensive - and 3d cells will be far more costly.
Existing cells manage ~20% efficient so the very best you can get is only 5* this but the cost to make them even the flat variety is the real killer. Unless the 3D cells manage to get 40%+ energy conversion and don't double costs to do it then it's not a much help.
New solar farms now are very happy to sacrifice % efficiency for much cheaper cells.
The big saver will be making cells which cost far far less even if only 10% efficiency even if they only have 50% absorbtion.

The problem is not if AC conversion can be done, its that only a fraction of the energy captured survives the conversion.

Before we talk about this kid's age, what do his parents do? Many of my dad's colleagues help out their kids by putting their names on the paper, or outright do everything but give all the credit to them. This just reeks of such a scenario.

Do you think a parent would sign away a million or billion $ idea so their kid can get extra credit?
