Forums - Sony - Life with Playstation Service Has Launched

Start your “Life with PlayStation”

+ Posted by Noam Rimon // Sr. Development Manager SCEA R&D

If you’ve ever wished you could find everything you need to start your day on your PLAYSTATION 3, Life with PlayStation give you one more reason to do so. This free service delivers a new way for you to utilize your PS3 to instantly access real-time news and information like weather updates from over 60 cities around the world.

Life with PlayStation provides a stunning interactive globe, a 3D world map that you can twirl around to see live cloud movement courtesy of the University of Wisconsin, combined with up-to-date weather information from the Weather Channel, top news headlines provided by Google news, and live web cam images via the Earth Television Network — all localized to the select city. And why not have your favorite soundtrack playing in the background while you go through your morning ritual (just think, no TV commercials and teasers to find out if you need to bring an umbrella to work)? You’re on your own for your morning caffeine fix.

For those following the progress of Hurricane Ike throughout last week, we were able to track the storm’s real-time movement from Life with PlayStation. (See the screenshots below)

We’re also really excited to share that this new lifestyle service is running in parallel with our Folding@home project. Essentially, this means that while you’re taking a stroll on Life with PlayStation, you’re automatically helping Stanford University to work towards curing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and various types of cancers. For those familiar with Folding@home, we’ve made some enhancements for more advanced simulations of protein folding and support for wider variety of simulations, in addition to adding a unique ranking system showcasing top contributors from around the world.

I’ve also put together a quick video demo to make sure you’re checking out all the new features here:

Life with PlayStation is now available for download by selecting the Folding@home icon under “Network” on the XMB. Give it a whirl, we look forward to reading your feedback.

Life with Playstation Service Has Launched
By: Josh Morey

When you Turn on your PS3 and navigate to the Folding@Home service you will be prompted with an update to download the new Life With Playstation service.

The download comes in at 126MB

Life with Playstation is a service available via the Playstation Network, it allows you to check the local weather and news headlines all around the world. If you click on the headline, it will open up the article for you to read. The Folding@Home service hasn't been replaced, it has just been given a new look.

Is this just NA region at the moment? There's no update prompt on my Asia region PS3.

I'll check on my PS3 later to see if the update has hit the EU.

Looks good though, I sometimes leave my PS3 running Folding@Home for a few hours, so it will be nice to have a new interface to scroll through, and the news and weather can't hurt.

My US PS3 doesn't have any FH update. :(

"Hey boys and girls,

Today, while testing the application, Life with PlayStation was available for download temporarily, by mistake. We will make official announcement for the service launch shortly.

So PS3 now has Forecast and News channels.

If I could be bothered I would go dig up some people's opinions on those Wii channels to see if they have suddenly changed their mind about how great they are no the PS3 has them.

I'll be the first to admit it: this is just as useless as the weather service and news service on the Wii.

Only improvement is that it doesn't use the oh-so-useless Wii Connect 24 feature. But... It's still useless!

Why does using WC24 mean it's useless... If this PS3 version updates without you telling it to then it is exactly the same as WC24.

I personally don't use the News channel, if it had a section for gaming news I probably would, but as it is I can get a better selection of the news I want elsewhere.

The Forecast channel I don't use often, but I have found it useful when I want to know the weather over the next few days and have missed the TV broadcast.

You missunderstood me. What I meant where the following two, seperate, things:

1) Life with Playstation is not very usefull, it's just as useless as the Wii Forecast/News services

2) Wii Connect 24 is a useless feature that basically only means your Wii is never off and continues to burn power and wear itself out even when you don't use it. The PS3 lacking this is a good thing.

Both are obviously only my oppinion.
