I know I've created this thread 60 times, but I am still just baffled over the love for this game.

"Innovative" "The new standard for FPS games" "Groundbreaking"

What?

It's not a terrible game and it's definitely fun, but I would by no means consider it anything over an 8.

So for the fifth or so time, I must ask, why the CoD4 love?

yeah right!!

Its not terrible, in fact you'd even call it good. But its basically Super Mario 64 with a few bells and whistles. Nothing over a 7.5

So for the 10th time (and after over 100 mario games) why are you still pretending to be an italian plumber?

Umm, sorry to say but SMG was more innovative than COD4 with all the gravity and whatnot. I really enjoyed SMG, though pretty easy most times, but i may have enjoyed COD4 a lil bit more

I think that's the key answer here. Innovation is overrated. What you want is a great game. Now some concepts get old when they are used to too often but in the end it only matters how good a game is. And you cannot improve a platformer in a radical fashion and you also cannot innovate in a big manner on a cinematic FPS. The concept is pretty much perfected and the actual story, art direction etc. are much much more important than any new gameplay feature. This genre has matured.

And this is the area CoD4 simply outdid everybody else. The last minutes of the marine in "Baghdad", the English SAS which were not exactly nice guys (which didn't deteriorate into the classic we are suddenly on the other side story) ... the screenplay was simply amazing. I think this will be one direction more and more games will take. Use a true and tested game engine with finished balancing etc. so the main work is on the "director" and "screenwriter".

Innovation and fun are 2 completely different aspects.

Alone in the Dark had some amazing innovations but most people wouldn't call it a AAA title.

People need to stop using innovation as an argument for a game being good.

Infinity Ward should take some pointers from Splash Damage, which made Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

Just had to knit pick.

I really do think CoD4 is overrated.  I'm not saying its a bad game but it isn't the end all FPS.  The original to me is way better than 4.  Hell I have had way more fun with the expansion to the first CoD than 4.  I have had way more fun with most online fps' than CoD4.  I'd rather play TF2 or Halo 3 than CoD4.

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

Looking through your games, it looks like you aren't a fan of FPS's. Why not make an "FPS's are overrated" thread instead?

CoD4 is basically what you get when you mix Day of Defeat with Counter-Strike... instant kills, modern weapons. It's got some balance issues, but that doesn't stop it from being the best twitch-kill FPS this gen. The only major issue I have is it doesn't have split-screen online multiplayer (one reason why I still want Halo) - if that were added in it'd be my most played game this gen by far, and I've clocked over 100hrs on Brawl.

As for its single player, who knows. Like all FPS's, I tried it for a bit and quickly got bored. This is one reason why I find Valve so overrated (I also blame them for destroying CS), though I'll still eventually give Portal or Bioshock a try to hopefully spark some interest in the genre.

CoD4 has bad graphics and bad sound effects, but its fun and has the most fluid controls imaginable. The best part of online is the RPG style of the weapons and level system.

One of the main problems of the PS3 version is the incredible lag, and during the first 2 months the online always crashed and was down all the time. The patch after Christmas also ruined the online for quite some time too, it appeared they added more lag to the better players to make the game more even.

The lag in the games also switches sides at about the half way point, most of your shots will be perfect for the first half, then the second half of the game you can unload until clips at people and they don't die. But if your shots miss for the first part, then you know during the second part of the game your shots will hit most targets.

It's the funnest FPS I've played.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Somehow it is not surprising to see a guy with mario on his avatar to post stuff like this.

Lets see, your a Nintendo Fanboy and your showing hate for a game that is very popular but not on a Nintendo system. Hmmm!!!

EMULATION is the past.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

It's like CoD 2, but with much better graphics. That explains it all.
