Forums - Gaming - The 1UP Show @ E3: Sony, MS, Nintendo

Somebody doesn't like the Wii. They must be biased. So the media gushing all over the Wii isn't biased...ah hell that logic falls apart pretty quickly. Don't worry, the Wii will do well no matter what this guy says. It may not enjoy the kind of sales it has now indefinitely though. MS and Sony both have a pretty good deck of cards for this holiday season.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Just check the reviews of the casual games that are being reviewed very well on 1up.com and stop complaining that one guy expressed his opinion of casual games, a guy who isn't going to be reviewing them anyway....

Also if you are so offended by 1up why don't you just avoid it then? Since your opinion of hardcore games is supposedly that they are for teens (Even though you were very excited when the same kind of violent RE game is coming on the Wii) then you should avoid game sites because they are inferior to you.

I didn't say 1up was terrible, I said that guy is engaging in poor journalism. I like 1up, as a whole. I've been an avid EGM reader since I was but a wee lad. That doesn't change the fact that this was shoddy journalism in this particular case.

I wasn't excited about a Resident Evil game coming to the Wii. We already discussed this at great length. I don't own any Resident Evil games, I don't own RE:4 Wii edition, and I have no plans to buy RE: UC, because they arent' games that interest me. Stop lying. I mean that -- stop lying, because I know you read my response.

Lastly, I don't comb 1up constantly looking for flaws or anything. This one was thrust at me! This link was posted on this site, right here, in this very thread. Why are you angry that I commented on it? Obviously that's unfair. Am I only allowed to watch if I agree absolutely with all of their positions?

Shrug, for games I care about, Nintendo mentioned them only briefly, but I expected that. Them not fellating them for several minutes on their presentation won't make the games less good. Maybe a bit more tense I guess? No expectations and no foul in my case I suppose.

Although, this certainly is not the first video game fitness, though it is the first first party I believe.

Also, as someone who has played against Thresh in Quake 2(I got decimated), I can't believe I'm saying this, BUT STOP F****** MAKING SHOOTERS. Dear lord. More saturated than fat in McDonalds Fries.

Someone may say the same for my current chosen genre of RPGs, but looking at that E3 made me cringe.

See Ya George.

People are people those are their opinions.

Stop.Right.There.

These aren't just people expressing their opinions, these are professional gaming journalists doing a professionally distributed taping. As I'm just a schmoe on an internet forum, in a totally unprofessional setting, I can express my opinions however I want. The PC platform is my personal favorite gaming platform. See? That's okay.

But the second I become a professional journalist in a professional setting, the rules change. I don't get to say that I don't care about a huge subsection of readers or their interests. That's certainly legal -- it's hard to be put in jail for any journalistic faux pas -- but it is hilariously inappropriate to make such statements.

For one "professional gaming journalists" means absolutly nothing, especially in out game world.  All journalists suck unfortunetly for us our game journalists just happen to be at the botton of the dirt filled journalist barrel.

Thing is they have been making  inappropriate statements about the PS3 for a year now, well it looks to be the wiis turn now.

Gaming journalists are hardcore gamers, so don't expect them to take casual stuff to well. They will not love joga wii.

Obviously it is biased, by definition. Outside of scientific contexts, bias means, and I quote Merriam Webster online: "an inclination of temperament or outlook."

Do you prefer any console? Then you are biased. That isn't necessarily bad, since you and I are just schmoes. In most places, being slightly biased is fine because these are casual settings and reasonable people don't let it significantly affect their objectivity. It is, however, very bad for a professional journalist, particularly if combined with the statement: "I don't care about non-hardcore gamers." Heck, if I don't care about any gamer but me, that's fine! But it is his job to care. That's the point of being a journalist! And yes, it woudl absolutely be as bad if a professional journalist said: "I don't care about the PS3 or Xbox360. I don't care about their gamers, either."

If you can find a journalist saying that, I will condemn them as well. I won't condemn people who simply think the Wii will fail -- N'gai Croal, for example, is a strong journalist who suspects that the roof might collapse on the Wii some day -- but that's only if they provide evidence and research. Again, they're journalists. If you are a professional video gaming journalist, simply saying Nintendo is bad because you don't like them and don't care about their gamers -- that is unprofessional. Why is this such a big deal? I was only making a joke. Why is anyone trying to defend this guy? If you look in other threads, I agree that Sony's press conference was the best!

Then I condemn the statements about the PS3, too! Those weren't posted in this thread. What was posted was written above.

Again, saying that other journalists are really bad and that the PS3 has recieved criticism too doesn't change the fact that this is also a case of poor journalism. As an extreme example, consider this: if I was caught stealing, could I point to another guy and say: "it's okay! These other guys were stealing too!" Obviously not: we're all culpable.

Similarly, the fact that other bad journalists exist doesn't change the fact that this guy made a hilarious journalistic faux pas. This one happened to be posted right here, in this very thread, so I happened to comment on this one. Heck, go to this link:

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=4231&start=0#end

Here's another article, posted today. I made fun of that too! That's also silly journalism.

Again, I'm shocked that anyone is trying to defend this guy. Why does it bother you so much? He's clearly very biased, and bias is clearly bad for a professional journalist. Thus, it's funny. What's the big deal? Why did everyone think it was funny in the other thread I just linked to, but it's not funny here?

Wow, guys.  Let's attack EVERYONE EVER THAT DOESN'T LIKE THE FREAKING WII.

Sorry.

I've been watching the 1UP Show for some time now, as well as listening to most of their podcasts, and I must say it's the best overall coverage of videogames available.  Every gamer has his or her own tastes, but they are all over the DS as much as anyone.  They were all into the Wii since last year's E3 except due to, I dunno, no games coming out recently, their excitement has faded a bit.

This was Nintendo's chance to woo the press back into the fold but they blew it.

1UP/EGM/GFW(ugh at new title) are varied in their coverage.  Some prefer some systems over others, reviews are always subjective, but they are fair reviewers as a whole.

Continuing to attack anyone and everyone that doesn't like the Wii isn't going to get you anywhere.  Ryan O'Donnel is spot on the vibe that hardcore gamers feel after that press conference.

Why this website is so completely far gone into the Wii craze is beyond me.  It's getting rather old and besides sort of knowing some of you people now I'm not sure why I stick around.

Please, if there are differing opinions out there, post them.  I want to hear them.  I'll admit that I've only listened to 1UP lately.  Point me to other podcasts, please.

You guys are being really harsh on gaming journalists. They are the enthusiast press. These are gamers who report on games, and they are objective in their reviews.

Just because in a roundtable discussion a guy said his opinion doesn't mean he will be reviewing those games that he is not interested in.

They are not at the bottom of the journalist barrel as you said because they are not even in the same barrel. It's not like these guys tried to become journalists of news or business but failed and came to gaming.

You can't be a gaming journalist if you don't like games. Also jumping at gaming journalists and whatnot as not being objective specifically is really moot when actual journalists reporting on life and death issues on tv, cable, in the news papers have done much more than this....

It was a round table debate over the show and 1 guy pointed out his concerns as a gamer, it's not that he is anti Nintendo at all as you know that he loves the big Nintendo hitters, he was just expressing his opinion of a genre of games.

Stop accusing 1up of being biased!

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Wow, this is like the culmination of hate on this forum. Everyone is taking their sides. This is like the US with Bush. The issue is the casual games of Nintendo. We have been fighting small time for months about these issues.

Everyone has been looking to E3 for answers. E3 was vague and offered no end to the fighting, so everyone is pushing harder than ever.

Now we have 1 forum member that swore to never return (Legend11) and even people that I always thought were too adult to attack like this (Bodhesatva) is picking sides.

The winner of E3 is in no way clear, but the gaming press will peg it a win for Sony, and the public news will peg it Nintendo. Further driving this fight to even greater heights. The extreme gaming press is even going so far as to say Microsoft beat Nintendo as well.
