I think its more like bring the parity of prices up to snuff with the rest of the world.
Note: Some games in my collection are no longer owned, but have owned.

Well they couldn't really sit back and do nothing with PS3 outselling it by a significant margin on a weekly basis and 360 not even having a dream of getting anywhere near Wii sales. At least at a reduced price they have a chance of remanining competitive.
Both Sony and Microsoft have had to drop prices out of desparation this gen. I think the way this gen has turned out can only be good for the consumers in the future gen. Both companies would have now learnt their lesson that consoles have to be sensibly priced and you can't foolishly assume that masses of people will buy your product at any price simply due to brand name. If things had turned out different we would have been looking forward to £550 Xbox 720 and £5 million PS4.

The first price cut was not a failure at all--it increased sales by 100% there YOY.
Just sayin'...
Jeez to read some comments in this thread you would think the ps3 was selling more than the wii every week.
Get over it ps3 is hardly selling more than 360 at the minute let alone come price drop.
Also ww it is 5 mill behind the 360.
yea anyone who thinks any price cut will have ZERO effect is kinda crazy... but will it turn the tide? nope it just doesnt wrok like that.

Quoting because it needs to be quoted.

I don't get it.
:-/
I think neither although its closer to desperation than confidence.
360 has been losing Others for a while now (despite its own sales growing its competitors have grown more and in less time on the market). If MS did nothing then by Feb 2009 Others would be lost to them and they'd be locked into third.
However this isn't a desperate fire sale - it;s trading of profit to try and ignite momentum, which is fair enough.
MS problem is that if despite cuts they continue to lose ground then it will be plain to all that 360 is third favourite console in Others no matter what they do.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Ahah.. too funny
OT - Its not desperation or confidence - Its pricing "strategy", its a normal step for gaming consoles.
