No, because that game came out before video games were accepted in the mainstream culuture in the west, and therefore before publically accepted stereotypes of what gaming is "suppose" to be were promident in people's minds.
If Nintendo had never released Mario Paint back in the day, and offered the exact same game over WiiWare today, you'd probably see an even bigger fuss over it than Wii Music. You'd have people yelling about they're just selling MS Paint to idiots and it only has Mario on it because he sells, all without the benefit of ever having played it.
Funny how timing can work like that.
