I hate that phrase, gotcha journalism. In the context of Palin, they "got her" by showing the world how fucking stupid she is, that she can't even form a coherent sentence if she didn't study it on a notecard beforehand.

Looks like the criteria changed somewhere in the early '90s.
Fortunately, the bias doesn't favor the Democrats much. (3 D unfairly blamed vs. 7 R, or 4 D unfairly credited vs. 5 R, makes an overall bias of 11 to 8 in favor of Democrats, I believe, but I may be wrong.) I'm glad I found this mistake, because someone else could have potentially blown it out of proportion. (A difference of 3 [edit: effectively 6 due to swing?] out of [edit: ~270?])

Basically, when it's not FOX or NY Post, it's gotcha. In real world, gotcha journalism is asking real questions. In FOX world, it's tossing softballs and letting her swing for the fence.

The sad thing is, gotcha questions do exist. What the spin artists want us to ignore is that gotcha questions unfairly put a person on the spot in an attempt to show them up or get something juicy or just make them look awkward. Like, say, this interview of Kerry:
SCHIEFFER: Let me show you something you said the other day. You were over at the White House for the Rosa Parks dedication.
Sen. KERRY: Yes, sir.
SCHIEFFER: And as you came out of the White House, a reporter ask you this question. Just listen.

Indeed, there definitley is gotcha journalism. Its just sad that people like Palin are so dumb that they have to claim questions a kid who has taken a high school government class could answer are "gotcha journalism". Hell, I could tell you several Supreme Court decisions I disagreed with at that age.

Here's my theory: usually, reporters ask some pretty tough questions but then let politicians give a two-minute rambling speech instead of answering anything, without even trying to call them on it.
Maybe Couric is so used to doing easy softball interviews that when Palin dodged the question she was like "WTF?" and just reverted to human instinct which is to repeat the question. Then when it happened again she knew it was too good to pass up.

I am sure you could. I imagine you could recall them instantly during an interview. If anyone is asked this question, they should simply say "Plessy v. Ferguson." Who, in today's age, would agree with segregation? I suppose David Duke and a few people but not many.
Honestly, why did she not pick a gimme magazine like "Time" or "US News and World Report?" Oy, Sarah, you could have answered those two questions with ease!

Edit: BTW, it shows pretty much the same thing until my final calculation... both are about the same if you blame the negatives of the first five on the previous administration. But I didn't calculate the positives... which would knock it back to a Democratic lead.
