MS denies 360 price cut event
Monday 15-Sep-2008 5:01 PM No European price cut news next week, says Microsoft
Microsoft has rubbished rumours that an event will be held next week to announce a European price cut for the Xbox 360.

A picture of a supposed upcoming Woolworths catalog emerged last week, listing new 360 price points at £129, £169 and £229 for the Arcade, Core and Elite console respectively.

According to a report on site Gamer.tm these prices are real, and will be rolled out at a "European event" next week. Not so, says Microsoft UK.

"There is no European event next week," a company spokesperson told CVG, denying the report.

Even so, prices of the North American and Japanese Core, Arcade and Elite Xbox 360 consoles have already been slashed, so Europe is hotly tipped to receive a similar slash in the near future. It might not happen next week, but we'd bet our seats it'll happen shortly down the line.

We'll keep you posted.

Overall, I hope it is false ...

Why would you hope something dropping in price is false? LOL. How dose this make them desperate?

The X360 price cuts happened in February.

If anything, the last set of price cuts were desperate, because they didn't follow typical Microsoft trends of price cuts after major hardware revisions.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the USD is trading at 0.55 per pound...Wouldn't this put GB pricing only slightly above US pricing? It doesn't seem that Microsoft is being desperate by doing this, just cutting the prices to a similar ratio vs. US and Japanese prices.

it also means lower profit margins, if any. the arcade retailing at £159.99 is already VERY cheap in the uk for a current gen hd console. lowering the price even further doesn't make it more appealing here. selling a hd console for that price would probably tarnish the console image in my opinion.

people in the uk don't mind paying £299 for a cosnole, because it usually means that they are getting what they paid for. a £129 hd console won't be taken as seriously as you may think. hardcore gamers may realise the value, but the casual (who are the HUGE majority of gamers out there), won't.

Didn't they have a Euro price cut in April just before GTA 4? 2 price cuts a year is a little desperate.

So is cutting 33% of your console's price a year into the race.

But lets face it, the HD console's have to do desperate things to keep up.

Indeed it is, I wasn't trying to imply that Sony weren't desperate last year. Small correction though- £425 down to £300 is more like 25%, not like it really matters though.

I was referring to the US cuts.  Though in hindsight, the cross-continental comparison was probably unjustified.

Here in Australia though (PAL), the price cut was effectively 30-33%.

Ah, right. I just came back from a 3 month visit to Australia. It's a great country but damn, the game/console prices are unfair. I saw MGS 4 for $120 which is about £60 in English money. I bought it for £35, meaning it's nearly twice as expensive in your country.

Thats a strange statement why would you not want a pricecut?

It's in damage to the PS3 and he supports the PS3. personally, I don't want it either. It could make Sony lose more money... leading to a weaker perfomance in the next generation.

Oh well fair enough altough both are good consoles in my opinion.

I know when the ps3 starts dropping in price I will consider getting one.

I have no allegience to either company.

So becuase dropping the price of one consle might increase the slaes of it and get more people buying the consle that costs less then the one that costs more its a bad thing? Thats the whole point of them dropping the price lol.

They are just trying to force Sony into losing money with these cuts.

And they succeed in that very well...The Xbox360 has a huge boost sell when Microsoft started the price cuts
Maybe Sony learn from this and do the same some day...

he never said it was a bad thing. he just hopes it's false for the reason stated above, which it is anyway.

I think when people say it's desperate they mean 2 price cuts within a 6 month span can seem desperate, no matter how you try to spin it. I think if MS can do it, they should, the ultimate winner is the consumer anyways.
