Forums - General - How long did it take you to learn to drive?

Im 16 and by this age my oldest brother was already driving to school. I feel like Im behind because here a bunch of people already know how to drive and Im one of the few who dont. My brother took me today to drive standard and said it only took him a week but Im bad behind the wheel and barely know how to drive automatic.

In his words "Your a man right? Then youre gonna learn to drive standard."

So howl long did it take you? I have a feeling this is gonna take me a LONG time. >_>

I wish I could ride a horse instead!!!

13 for me.(I remember when I learned to, but not how long it took me.)

I was interested back than, but when you get your own car you won't be so excited to drive.

Automatic didn't take me very long although I had to have my beginners for 9 months (it's the law).

Standard took me about a week to drive without stalling. I waited maybe 3 weeks before I started driving in heavy traffic though.

still dont knowut I gave my G1's

Took about 20 1 hour lessons, one a week for 5 months.

Failed my first test as I drove out of the test centre car park when I went through the traffic lights at amber not realising you must wait for green when it's not a pedestrain crossing.
Four weeks later on the way to second test I got too close to a tree and took off the cars wing mirror, then on the test itself mounted the pavement to avoid an oncoming car down a narrow road....and erm.....PASSED!

So just to recap:

Going through an amber light that is about to turn to green and therefore all other lanes of traffic have stopped...VERY DANGEROUS!

Mounting the pavement with the potentially of killing many pedestrians...OK.

If by standard you mean stick(manual), it took me less than a day to get the hang of it, I learned when I was 16. But I had been driving automatic since I was like 9.

I find this study biased to adults.

Yea. All those names mean the same thing I just chose the one that came to my head. And wow one day huh. 1st gear kept kicking my ass.

@dtewi
Not really. Ive known people who could drive at your age.

You only really start to learn once you've passed anyway.

I mean where in the lessons do they teach you to:

Change CDs / pick another track on MP3 player whilst keeping one eye on the road.

Holding the stearing wheel steady with your legs whilst you open a bottle of drink

Convince yourself it's ok to look away for 5 seconds whilst you rummage around in the bag on the back seat to check you've remembered our wallet / phone etc

i didn't feel like driving until i was around 26, then i went to driving school 15 lessons and 1 failed test later, i got my license.
