Forums - Gaming - Metroid Prime vs. God of War vs. Halo Combat Evolved

Halo 1 was simply the first FPS I played on a console that wasn't a steaming pile of crap/was actually a great game in its own right.

I have played Goldeneye, PS1 shooters, PS2 shooters but Halo was the first one that was actually any good/compared favourably to the average good PC shooter.

Health regen:

So I don't have to run all over the map/run halfway back down the level to pick up a health pack. Hunting for a health pack because I took a stray grenade blast is the definition of annoying and you never know if theres a health pack in the next room or a whole bunch of guys waiting to blast you back to the last checkpoint.

AI

Halo has won awards for it. Need I say more? Btw before you think that because the AI didn't pwn you hard doesn't mean it couldn't have. The AI would never miss unless by design.

Story

The story was pretty gripping from the get go. It was possibly the best opening scene I have ever played in a FPS game.

etc.

Metroid Prime was phenomenal, God of War was very good, Halo was decent.

This.

Someone above asked why Halo is an overrated mediocrity. It has mediocre contorl scheme, mediocre story, and sub-par gameplay. There is a reason why the PC version bombed as hard as it did. It brought nothing new to the table other than being readily available and mass marketed like no other game before.

Metroid on the other hand defined its genre, it was polished, well made, and interesting to play through, multiple times even.

God of War also was a lot of fun to play through, but lynch me if you want, it did not have the same feeling of depth and expansiveness that Metroid had. Maybe it was the shorter play through time, I don't know but it just didn't.

Stop spewing garbage without even doing a shred of research. Go look at the most played PC games on Gamespy right now, Halo:CE is ranked at 18 and the Halo demo is 22. If you had looked at the list around a year ago you would have seen Halo:CE in the top 10.

It didn't sell well on PC?! It's a port of a 2.5 year old game and according to an 2006 article by Edge magazine it ranks 20th in PC game sales. And Halo 2 PC was ported 3 years after the Xbox version not a few months as you say. the reason it did lackluster is because it came out right before the Halo 3 Beta when everyone was already anticipating its sequel.

You are right, Halo 2 did come out a few years later.

As to the players playing it, Gamespy is reporting 254k people playing in total. No matter which way you cut it that is a tiny fraction of people that actually play online games on the PC. Most games don't even use Gamespy, It's also reporting that 101k people are playing Half-Life 1 online right now, that's nearly half of the total and that's just BS. Also, I don't know where they got the figures for the #20 best selling game on the PC but I call bullshit on that. I could only find the Wikipedia entry for best PC game sales which goes up to at least 20 and Halo isn't even on the list there. If you find me better information than what I have found please link it and I will concede.

Your right that is a small fraction of the overall population however Gamespy's portal software is used for a large percentage of games to allow users to find servers. Although Gamespy does not host every computer game it hosts some of the most popular ones so Halo:CE's ranking is a fair assesment of its continuing popularity.

I believe Half-Life and HL2 are ranked so high because Counter Strike may also fall under that category boosting the overall player count.

The article I referred to was written in 2006 and so Halo:CE has probably slipped down from the number 20 spot quite a bit, also I don't think the article included downloadable sales which make up a hefty percentage of PC sales today. Nevertheless it shows Halo PC's relative success.
