Forums - Sony - Why Sony's E3 Press Conference "Won"...

lets put it this way. the ms and ninty conferences sucked. ms tried to make it a casual event, but showed that they dont understand casual. ninty showed that they only care about casual anymore (the prime video looked too slow, it needed to be better to convince me). considering that the only game that casuals are really gona hear much about from this event are the big ones which gamers will hype and makes no difference and rock band which is on all platforms. the rest of the games they will stumble upon some how.

sony showed some good/great games and showed that they were committed to both the psp and ps3 (although mainly the ps3 since thats what sony needed to focus on right now and they did). showed one (just infamous right?) big new ip, and few smaller ones. the big news was unreal tounament 3 with user mods from the pc and the deal with ncsoft. both those are gigantic blows to ms. sony preached to the choir and it showed. great conference.

o and since killzone blew everyone away (if it didnt than those are blind fanboys) right after ms's boring conference sony stole the show right then. it destroys every other game graphically, and polish and animations and lighting and seems like it should play well. huge lift for sony.

The market for FPS games on expensive consoles is limited, so no, Killzone didn't "blow everyone away". It was cool, though.

BTW, if I see a Sony fanboy calling Xbox the FPS console again, I'll shit myself laughing...

Well, it all depends on the definition of winning. I look at it in 2 ways. First, who excites their fanbase the most? Second, who makes the most new announcements?

I feel that Sony won on both accounts. A quick look at the pressers:

Microsoft: They showed a lot of gameplay. Some really cool games, but nothing new (other than throwaways, like Scene It and Disney movie downloads). They decided to focus on now and not the future. Cool stuff, but not a lot to ponder/anticipate for the future.

Nintendo: They talked a lot and showed a whole bunch of montages. They did show us some new gameplay, as well as the zapper, the wheel and the pad. (Which, btw, could be the biggest thing gaming has ever seen. It has a ton of possiblities.) Nintendo is in a weird place right now. They are trying to cater to everyone, but that's going to leave some of the "hardcore" upset with them.

Sony: Well, they showed a lot. From the psp redesign to the gt trailer to Killzone. On top of the ps3 pricecut, there's a lot to talk about. Personally, I think the biggest news was something that no one is talking about and that is partnering with epic to tweak the ue3 to the ps3. That's really going to help a lot of developers.

All of that being said, imo sony won, the big N came in second and ms brings up the rear. Now, it should be noted that e3 this year was nothing like it has been in years past. It's certain that Nintendo and Microsoft still have cards to be played. Maybe they felt that this wasn't the time to put them on the table, while Sony really had no choice but to come out with both barrels blazing.

Please don't take this the wrong way but the reason they "won" is because people really weren't expecting much and were just relieved that they actually have a decent Fall lineup that compares somewhat to the Microsoft and Nintendo offerings. Before E3 it looked like Sony was going to it's slaughter this holdiay season where it was up against major franchises/big guns like Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, and Halo 3 and all it had were unproven games. It was likely a major relief when Unreal Tournament 3 was announced exclusive for the year. I'm glad though because Sony was definitely due for some good news after the year they just had.

No offense, but we already knew what the lineup would be. 20 (or so) best games for the rest of the year were posted for each system on this forum and it was determined then that the PS3 lineup stacked up well.

Infamous and echochrome were the new games, and they stand out because of it.

UT3 and Haze (confirmation) were indeed welcome good news, but after M$ and Nintendo showed just stuff we knew was coming and didn't do a great job of it (barely showed Brawl, no online for brawl, no online for MP3, only 1 "new" game, Mario Kart, which by the way was my most exciting game announcement of E3 so far because of the release date being so soon, but that's it, and finally a focus on an exercise game that could be even better with the Playstation Eye).

I think the PS3 price-drop (leaked by Circuit City), PSP redesign (better battery life, smaller, and connects to TVs!), PSP bundles, Home connectivity to cell phones and PCs, Home menu that goes straight to any game or multiplayer online mode of games (which saves menu steps therefore making it faster), new MGS4 trailer and news that tehre will be a playable demo next week, and finally...Killzone 2 actually living up to expectations which were hyped out of this world...all show that Sony took the show.

Oh, and they made fun of the Ridge Racer quote. Come on...that's worth a lot. Sony making fun of itself.

Good points. I disagree on the pad, but we'll see.

I forgot to mention that Unreal 3 engine deal with Epic. Huge, and supports rumors that Epic is working on an exclusive PS3 title (that is not UT3).

if u call winnoing showing lots of FMV using blueray yes they did but actual screen gameplay shots in some were down right horrible. my opinion is another e3 where sony shows tonms of videos that looks good to "convince" people they are gonna get that "great" of gra[phics then finds out it isnt true

They were all in-game and most were playable to all the press.  We'll know their impressions soon.

Personally, I did not care for the M$ and Nintendo segments when they played games.  Phil Harrison did play the new Motorstorm level though.  That Motorstorm bundle makes a lot more sense now that we know the new content will be released next month as well.  That probably adds a little value unless the new content is free.

Go ahead and laugh, because Sony has more variety as I posted in another thread...

The FPS announcements take away from M$.  Sony actually has a better FPS lineup upcoming unless you only like Halo.  Nothing wrong with that.

Also, don't forget the Sony announcement that they're partnering with NCSoft, the Korean game giant. That's especially amazing when you consider the lingering antagonism between the two countries (Japan colonized and horribly plundered Korea, many moons ago, and there's still friction over this). This is important because NCSoft is one of the key players in the East Asian game market, especially China, where online gaming is growing unbelievably fast. Very sharp move.
