Forums - Sony - PS3 not reading discs...

So, woke up this morning to the wonderful news that my PS3 which I got barely a month ago isn't reading discs of any variety anymore. I still have it under warranty, but I'm hesitant to get another one now. I had my 360 do the same thing (not RROD, but stop reading discs) but that took over two years to happen. Now I'm stuck between getting another used 80 GB with backwards compatibility, or getting a new 80 GB without it. Either way, this is annoying as fuck.

The dedication you show to any particular console or company is inversely proportional to the number of times you have gotten laid. If you get laid enough, even if you prefer a certain brand, you just don't give enough of a shit to argue about it on the internet.

That sucks..I assume you have it connected to the internet and the latest firmware, right?

My suggestion if that's true? Don't return it or try and get a new one. First and foremost, if you've only had it a month, backing up your files should be easy because there shouldn't be a lot of them. Do that to say a thumb drive - get any pictures, save games, music etc off, then go to the System Settings and restore factory defaults. Then just connect to the internet, update again, and see if that works.

If it still doesn't read discs, then call them. Otherwise, calling them is foolish in my opinion, because by the sounds of it you don't want to risk the type of system you'll get back if they do indeed offer to replace it. That, and they're going to tell you to do exactly what I just did anyway...I'll even put money on that=P

This is not a common problem for the PS3... get it replaced and it'll more than likely last you 10years.

I've had my ps3 since launch and no drive problems at all.. and i use it a LOT.

If it's under warranty, just send it back to sony. They could probably fix it. I've also seen posts on how to fix it yourself on forums.afterdawn.com but if you aren't especially tech-savvy, I won't suggest you check out that site.

It sucks for you cos I have a launch era ps3 and have only had problems with freezes because if you don't know, the 60gb can also serve as a hot plate lol.

I had that happen to my 40GB after a month too! Very annoying but retruned it and got a new one after 4 weeks. It's been fine since...

mate listen to me this exact thing happened to me! do not send it in!

you need to do a full system quick reformat and it will be good as new. o and btw when i did it it unfortunatly wiped off all my music and videos.

why would you be hesitant?
it was obviously faulty. that is why manufacturers give warranties in the first place because nine time out of ten a faulty one will show up in 1-2 months or even right out of the box.
the real sucker punch is the one that craps out after warranty.
don't worry so much about things like that. even the 360 problems aren't that bad as long as they are covered.
everything dies my friend, everything dies
On a side not: have you been crying? or has it just been raining... on your face?

Backup people..backup backup backup!  It's not hard, and is very easy to transfer things back once you're done formatting.

I'm not crying. I've just been chopping onions. I'm making a lasagna... for one.
