Forums - Nintendo - Wii and DS getting released in India this month

Piracy would hamper any significant progress the wii/DS make there. There may be good hardware sales but don't expect as much from the software.

Also, although China and India have far larger populations than the US, I think there are way more people altogether in the US capable of making such purchases (games and gaming devices). So the talk of wii shortages due to massive sales in India and China has no base

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Around the Network

From the news article:

According to various reports , Nintendo is set to officially launch its juggernaut platforms in India on September 30. Rival platforms from Microsoft and Sony are already fairly well established in India. To try to get a foothold in the market, Nintendo will price Wii at 19,900 Rupees , or about $440. DS will launch at 7990 Rupees , or about $180.

Supposedly Wii games will cost as little as 1499 Rupees (about $33) while DS games will cost as little as 999 Rupees (~$22).

I wonder what price Zelda would retail for... ;)

Oh hell, I'd HAVE to buy that.

As bdbdbd said, India overall is poor but there's a sizeable number or people with sufficient income to buy a console.  Pirating will be huge but Nintendo DOES make a profit off of console sales so they can't lose irregardless.

I don't expect India to contribute hugely to DS or Wii sales, but a few thousand or so weekly isn't out of the question. Italy-esque sales?

Whoa, there. India has a working adult population of over half a billion. Of those half-billion, approximately a third of them could afford a Wii without feeling any adverse effects whatsoever. That's already more than double the entire population of Italy. The top 10% of their population makes about 1/3 of India's income, so every single one of that 110,000,000 people can easily afford a Wii.

Combine that with the fact that it caters to the non-gamer, and you're looking at a HUGE potential market. I'd expect at least five million total sales by end of generation, and as much as 50m (although I'm leaning much more toward the bottom end of that prediction).
