Thanks fnl.

@sublime. I suspect I might have moved it somehow, however in the task manager there is a "new task" option... is that the same thing?

Edit... yes it is "msconfig" and new task is the same as run.

I will have to google the applications tomorrow, or perhaps make a thread and list them and see if anyone knows what I need and don't need from here.

I can help you with that so you make an thread because there are probably more people on this site that used msconfig

Well the only reason that I can see for a person that knows about computers, and i really mean KNOWS, is that it can be spitting jets of fire 10 feet high from every single orifice that it possesses, and as long as it was not caused by a coke spill on your keyboard the Mac store will fix it for you for free.

Best suggestion I can give you is this, since you won't be building your PC (are you sure? with 2000 you can build a near super computer) and you want to avoid/minimize the chance of the same thing happening I suggest you figure out which Alienware computers are easiest to upgrade by yourself. Since if something does break then you will be able to replace it more easily later on.

On a side note, Blizzard never pushes PC tech with their games, they don't need flashy HD to cover lack of artistic skill, they have more of it than almost any company I know out there so no matter what PC you buy right now you will be good for D3.

@twroo

Besides start up processes look under Services and disable the ones that are extra. It will probably be full of Microsoft crap, but I have seen bullshit in there as well.

Well, my 3,000 dollar Macintosh from 4 years ago died.  I bring up price not to brag but because its relevant in my woes.

I have wanted to get a gaming PC since Diablo 3 was announced but I was holding off for a spec announcement.  Now that my desktop died I'm urged more and more towards a purchase.  I have an Alienware credit card and it's just itching to spend.

But it scares the crap out of me, losing a machine that cost so much, I feel like I was cheated on by the wife I don't have.  But it's this sort of, scared shitless at it happening again feeling.  I'm affraid if I invest in an expensive gaming PC it's just going to be pointless when it dies.  If it was a 500 dollar Walmart computer that died in 4 years... no biggie.  But If I'm going to make a serious investment I need to know it will last, a security you cannot have outside of your warranty's length.

I looked up online and the model of Mac I had, Dual Core G5 Powermac is prone to having logic board failures and power supply issues.  But I'm scared our janky power capabilities in this old house might have contributed to its death.  I use a surge protector but if it was the power supply that went out on the mac then did the surge protectors even help?

I'm just confused, and when I opened her up it was really dusty.  I don't know what to do about that, a computer tech once told me you shouldn't air duster your systems insides because it forces the dust into the board.  But I don't know what else to do.  I use an air filter in my room and I dust when I can, what else can I do? Seems like as long as a computer uses cooling fans it is going to draw dust in.  Which brings me to the fact that you can get liquid cooling on most Alienware systems... would that help?

I just have too many questions, I'm sorry... but this whole ordeal scares the crap out of me and shows me how fickle an expensive computer can be.  I'm really tempted to say screw owning a nice system and just use my laptop for internet not play games.  But DAMN I want Diablo 3 and some other upcoming PC games.

I looked on the site and they cheapest version is 1,099.00 but I would get a quad core, radeon hd 4700, 2 gigs and buy ram from somewhre else (trust me it is not worth 100 for two more gigs when you can buy it for 20-30) hard drive matters on you taste and I would get a respawn dvd, just incase any thing  happens. The total should lie in you range.

I'll make the thread tomorrow as it's way too late now.

vlad, I'm fairly sure Apple won't pay for it. my warranty expired. They do have a free replacement plan due to high numbers of this model breaking... but unfortunately mine falls about 100 digits short of the free replacement serial numbers. You are right about Blizzard though, but I think I might wait till I see some requirements because my luck is crappy like that. I would build but I'm afraid I would muck it up. Plus there is no warranty that way right?

a12331, that's about what I had in mind. I'm starting to think I might try to wait though, prices will come down and D3 won't come out for a while. Temptation is a bitch though, we'll see.

I ll try to wait to black friday and if there is a monster sale then move your ass and buy it.

Tispower1, stop whining ya baby! lol. j/k but seriously, if it was the logic board to fail I'm looking at a huge replacement cost, which I probably won't do. I would gladly take a smashed keyboard over that :o)

Lem_Nx, lol, I guess everyone hates alienware but me. All I know is their systems aren't front loaded with crap you don't need, they have good support and their hardware gets rave reviews. But I guess I see why people don't like them, I'm just saying they aren't using their name to excuse selling crap systems. The quality is still there.

TWRoO, I may have gotten that wrong, it could be msconfig. Like I said, it's been a while, I don't remember exactly. It did seem to help me on my old computer, not leaps and bounds... but slightly better framerates. Hmm, are you on Vista? Might be different there, I just looked on my XP start menu and sure enough "Run" is right where it always was. But I really want someone smarter than me who knows more about this stuff to confirm this process for you. I don't remember it well enough to advise.

fair enough, it's just a pain to replace on a laptop, but arguably you've suffered more

Tispower, I didn't realize you meant laptop... that does suck.

hehe, it was kinda my point for punching it Though Adobe freezing while doing college work is incredibly annoying.
