Forums - Microsoft - "New Banjo Kazooie was originally a platformer" WTF!!???

My only question is if they are confident in this new idea why not just create a new ip instead of misleading fans that wanted more of fun platforming of the first two games? If the idea is good it wouldn't need Banjo and Kazooie to stand on it's own two feet.

Rare's Neil Harrison says that Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts did start life as a platformer.

While Nuts & Bolts centres around creating your own customised vehicles, development didn't always push in that direction.

"What we didn't want to do was to just do another Banjo Kazooie which was exactly the same and that's actually we started doing at the beginning," explains lead technical artist Neill Harrison.

"We thought well, we'll just do another platform game as Banjo Kazooie. We did that for a bit and as gamers and as developers, it just felt a little bit stale. It felt like it didn't fit in today's market. With the 360, there's just so much more we can do, we thought we'd try something different."

Check back later today for the full interview with Rare's Neill Harrison and Elissa Miller.

Sounds like they tried to do 'just another Banjo' and decided they could do better. If they think it will be better, bring it.  And vehicles are just an extension of the player that allows them to travel greater distances and create customizable gameplay.  Rare stated that their levels were so big that they needed another method of travel and this is how the current gameplay came about.

Still im pissed i loved Banjo and im only buying this game to get the free Download of the 1st one on the XBA.

I Do hope its good but when i heard "new banjo" i wanted a new banjo.. not twisted metal with banjo characters.

Color me a lil sad that the once great rare (games like banjo64, Goldeye, Perferct dark, Donkey kong Snes and 64) are making subpare games ever since star fox adventures.

I mean its like getting a New Final fantasy without it being a RPG.... its Final "fantasy 14 Racing"....

EVERYONE would be upset. Its not even a spin off its banjo 3........
they should of made "banjo kart racing" or "banjo sim"

LOL, you do know you could just buy the game once it is released on XBLA for a lot less?  Is Halo a racing game? It has vehicles, so I guess so.

It still will be a platformer, mainly build on racing elements.

Rare games, and Silicon Knights games for that matter, were only good because Miyamoto (and or Nintendo) had a hand in them.

Tell that to Naughty Dog for putting Jak and Daxter in a racing game or Crash in a racing game and party game. Tell that to Nintendo for splashing Mario's likeness over multiple sports titles, party titles and racing titles. Name recognition goes a long way. I'm sure they have faith in their product, but as the article says, they first decided to make a Banjo-Kazooie traditionally and then changed their opinion on what they wanted out of it. They didn't, as you're putting it, first create this vehicle creation idea and then add Banjo to the mix to entice fans.

Yes but they had recently released games in thier standard genre before being branched which helps with name recognition.  B&K hasn't had a game in a long time and i suspect many fans(whom have wanted a traditional B&K game for a while now) will not be enticed.

Not to say i don't think the game will be successful or fun or find a userbase, it's simply very dissappointing to the fans of old.  I am one of those fans.

I still don't see why they couldn't come up with a new character to sell this idea.  it's not like the worlds even look terribly similar to the old games being all gigantic, open, and HD.  Hell i enjoyed Diddy Kong Racing and it's adventure elements why can't this be an upgrade of that series.  Seems more natural a fit to me, but they would probably have issues since nintendo owns that ip huh?
