Forums - Gaming - Buying an HDTV, input appreciated!

Moving into a new apartment when school starts, and given that I bought a PS3 this summer I figure an HDTV would be nice.

I'm a college student, so it's not like I got oodles of cash just lying around, but my dad and roommate are chipping in, so it shouldn't be too bad.

So my question is, how big? How expensive?

Right now I'm looking at some of the cheapest 32" ones, at around 500. Is that big enough? I realize that a 32" in 16:9 tv is gonna look smaller than a 32" 4:3 tv. Should I go up to 37"?

And lastly, what are some sets (mostly for gaming + watching sports) you guys recommend that wont break the wallet?

How big is your room? I'd wait a little while and pickup a 42 / 50 inch television when the liquidations occur. Black Friday is always a great time :).

Console Agnostic since 2001.

I'd say go with a Sony one... but your budget is only 500 bucks....

so yeah, good luck getting even a decent 720P 32/37 inch.

Visit Walmart and Costco before you buy anything. At least in Canada, they have some pretty good sets. I bought a SOYO/Privé from Walmart for pretty cheap. They looked like shit in store hooked up to regular cable, but Walmart Canada lets you try them out for 3 months (costco canada 1 month). I brought it home hooked it up via HDMI and am now very satisfied.

Waiting til Black Friday or just later in the year is a good idea.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

We got a Sharp AQUOS 32" 720p last year for $500 on Black Friday. Like many have suggested before wait until then and you can usually get a good deal on a TV. That time and around the Superbowl are the best times of the year to usually buy a HDTV.

When you do decide to purchase your tv, I would definitely check out the Samsung televisions they are great. Sony of course has great tv's but you would probably be over budget with a Sony and I think you can get a 32" Samsung for around that price.

And that's last year!

This year, I'm sure, you could get a better set around the same price.

BTW, there are also some Sharp Aquos 32" that actually are 1080p.

360 IS OPERATIONAL AFTER 37 DAYS!

Thanks for all the input, I might end up going with the Black Friday idea. The prices also give me a nice idea of what kinda deals are out there.

In the mean time, I've pretty much decided 32" is not enough. Incidentally, I saw a $799 42" 1080p LCD Dynex at Best Buy. How's Dynex's HDTVs?

no. Just no... and this is coming from someone who's working at BestBuy.

if you are willing to suffer Black Friday.. do it, Personally, I rather pay more and just get a good TV during regular week sales.
