Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 360 game direct-to-console downloads: Yes or no?

M$ has been talking about a download only system next generation.

I'd never buy a system with only downloaded games. With discs I can lend them to friends and then trade them in when I don't need them anymore. All that goes away with downloads.

I think a download only system would be a huge mistake for any of the companies.

Sony beat them to the punch I'm afraid. Warhawk, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Fatal Inertia Ex, Siren Bloodcurse, NFL Headcoach, Burnout Paradise.

See title.  Imo it would be good and would cut out some of the retail middleman.  Of course the games would still need to sell in the stores but this would be a MSFT argument for the future of Live, i.e. discless future.  How about it?

Turns out the retailer middleman gets all sorts of angry when you try to cut them out. Until there is a way to digitally download the console itself it would be stupid to try and push digital download as anything other than an annoying alternative to buying games in the store.

They'll need a pretty big hard drive then. Or allow you to save the games to a flash drive that you format through the Xbox with their own file format with some code tied to the thumb drive and your 360 so you can't pirate and what not....

Then yes... I can see it working.

I agree the 120gig is a minimum. For the 20 and 60 gig units the abilty to transfer a backup copy is a must in one form or another. I would settle for the abilty to redownload as many times as I want like Steam allows for. I know Live allows for this but I'd like some form of guarantee that titles will be avalible for redownload in concurrent generations of the console.

I also agree that there needs to be a discount for a strictly digital download as the ability to resale a game is lost.

For arcade games, yes. Full games, no.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Sony is already doing it with some titles, so I think it would be a pretty good idea for MS to do it.

It's really convenient to be able to switch between Warhawk and MGS4 without having to get up and change the disk. Next gen I want the systems to be able to hold multiple disks :P

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

Bad idea unless they sell them through downloads AND buying discs, would suck for other people around the world who can't get fast internet connections (if they even have) on their consoles...

NO.......... potentially millions of people out of jobs as more and more people would download instead of getting off their asses and going to a vidoegames shop, And not only that, If you buy a game on a CD and its crap you can always take it back and trade it in for somthingelse, Imagine if you buy a stinker via download and your stuck with it...... Not a nice thought

LAWL. I vote bolded the best point of the thread.

PSN: chenguo4
Current playing: No More Heroes

Brick and mortar stores aren't nearly as relevant as they used to be. I think downloads will only catch on more and more as time goes by.
