The most overhyped game ever MUST be FFVII; FFIV and FFVI are so much better.

Routso: I think you've confused overhyped with overrated. Seeing as how FF7 had ZERO hype when it was released (FF was unknown back then).

 

I'm going with: The conduit (by the ninty fans here), Killzone 2, Gears 2, Resistance 2 (not as badly as the 2 before it) and of course Madworld.

Hype is not necessarily before a game releases; FFVII had enormous hype after the game has released that extends even today.

Spore, definitely. The way people were talking before its release, it was to be the perfect game which would spark a new revolution in gaming. Then it comes out, and it turns out it's just a collection of shallow copies of other games wrapped around an interesting social networking experiment. (Just like I predicted a year ago... hmm...)

LBP definitely comes in second for the year, though. People are predicting sales in the multi-millions, reviews in the 96-97% range, and the opinion that it'll spark a new revolution in gaming. Hmm... sounds kind of like Spore to me. So, I'm saying it right now: LBP will be nothing more than a shallow platformer wrapped around a cool physics engine.

There's a difference between hype and over-hype. Some people act the release of LPB is the second coming of Christ.

It's to be expected some of the more rabid fanboys will rear their ugly faces.  Just let them be shallow. :P  You know what's overhyped?  The Phantom... Google it.
