Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 360 defects: an inside history of Microsoft’s video game console woes

Sometimes I think people give MS way too much flak for RRoD.

Sony and Nintendo aren't exactly foolproof either. Sony just recalled half a million laptops and had that battery problem. Even though that's not gaming it still falls under the Sony domain. And Nintendo has had the lens problem in the Wii and the hinge breaking problem with the DS.

Very long read (I am finally done), but I am used to Malstrom articles. That article explained a lot of things and presented some things most of us din`t know. I am surprised there is no damage control yet.

Another I'd add. This is why Nintendo just doesn't fire up new factories and create massive quantities of product. When you expand too quickly and rush things, quality can suffer and bite you in the ass.

M$ can't do anything right. Why do people still buy there products?

I have a Zune(won it from Live Search Club) and it works great.  I download audio and video podcasts and listen to tons of music at work.  Not sure what problems people have with it.  The software is great also.

I own a 360 and so far I have had 1 rrod and am still incredibly happy with it and will gladly purchase M$'s next console.

i had a zune 80gb very sturdy great graphical interfase, but got a HUGE blue dots all over the screen.

so i vote for zune = crap.

i will stick to japanese/korean brands thank you.

Lol, and I own Vista 64 and a 360 and have had zero issues with both.

I have to admit alot of what people bitch about in regards to MS is just empty bitching. Typically they read about someone that read about someone that read about someone that had issues with a MS product. All the while running on Windows with little problems.

The only exception is the 360 RROD which cant be down played, millions of 360s are defective and its an issue, but over all, still over blown.

Take Vista for instance, a vast majority of people bitching about Vista are having problems with it because their computer CANT RUN IT. The problem was Computer manufacturers putting it on econo computers that couldnt handle it and now millions of people are saying its a crap system, but, as you can see in my sig, if you have a good computer, Vista is an f-ing dream.

Oh well, good article. done ranting.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

I'm currently about half way through, but it's a really good read.
Dean Takahashi is a good writer, I used to read his stuff all the time in the San Jose Mercury News.

i remember, microsoft shipped about 10m in the beginning of 2007, and loads people accused them of stuffing the channels, it makes sense now

Well, they originally claimed that they would sell 10 million by the time the PS3 launched.  They actually didn't reach 10 milllion until half way through 2007 with the Wii nipping at their heals.  It was an embarrassment for Microsoft who claimed they sold 10 million in 2006.

What's more embarrassing, though, is that they still haven't fixed the RROD issue.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Vista is a dream, but it certainly doesn't deserve most of the flak it received. Of course the main reason why it drew so much flak is because the best way to start using it was with a brand new computer. Even a 2 year old rig (that was not high end when new) wouldn't cut it without a serious hardware overhaul, making the transition that much more expensive/inconvenient. The driver situation (long since fixed) really didn't help. No point in using a new OS if none of your old devices work with it.

"Vista is like getting a new computer?" More like get a new computer before getting Vista, or spend enough in upgrades that you're essentially buying a new computer anyway.

I didn't like XP. At all. I used it for work because that was the standard OS.

Vista is more user friendly, and wears a more attractive exterior, but at the cost of processing power and memory resources. Which while cheap when buying or building a new computer, doesn't help those who aren't on the 2-3 year computer replacement plan.

But after about a year of Vista, can't say I like it much more than XP. It still can't update to SP1 without inducing a system crashing memory failure, making the easiest upgrade path a straight purchase of another copy of Vista (to replace the factory install) with SP1 integrated. That will never happen. In the meantime, using the 32bit version means the system (pre-SP1) only recognizes 3GB of RAM.

Flaws? Plenty of them.

Worthless? Mainly to those without the hardware to run it properly.

Vista is better then XP now.

The Zune is just as good as an iPod but it looks 3 times uglier.

The 360 is awesome.
