They don't have a real reason to be. I'll wait and see how many people were holding out for a much lower price and then see what sony has to say.
| FinalEvangelion said: It is wise for Sony not to get into a spending war with MS, whether it is price cuts or third party exclusives. They know they can't win that kind of fight. The big difference between Nintendo / Sony and MS is that Nintendo / Sony are in the business because they want to be in the gaming business, while MS is in there to eventually get into a monopoly position where they can fix prices like they do with OS and Office applications. That's why MS will lose so much money, is they know if they establish a monopoly - they can easily make it up from the consumers. |
Lets hope that this won't help them and they will just lose a hell lot of cash. Maybe they will finally quit the industry.
| Ail said: They are kicking butt in Others and they successfully survived a huge 360 price cut there this year ( 100 euros). 6 months after the 360 cut there, the PS3 almost outsells the 360 by 2:1 factor this week... |
And that's the heart of it. Given this there is no need for them to do anything but monitor the next 2 weeks sales. If 360 suddenly goes gangbusters their hand may be forced - but I actually think that's unlikely. I think 360 is past point of ever going gangbusters ahead of PS3 again and I think Sony are pretty confident of that.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
Something to remember. A cheaper product while attractive to many can also be seen as inferior to a more expensive one. Even though software wise MS arguably have a better line up. Also with increased spending budgets at Christmas its easier to justify an expensive purchase.
Ynwa.
why should sony care about this price drop when the ps3 is still going to be selling more then the 360
It will be interesting to see which opinions will be closest to reality next season.
Sony seems content with a fair improvement over last year's holiday sales at minimal losses per unit sold. Playing the conservative card. Presumably they're counting on selling more software this season than last to push SCE further in to the black. IMO, this is their biggest area for improvement in terms of improving financials as well as convincing developers of the commercial viability of the platform. Due to increasing sales and demand, it's less of a hard sell although many are probably still sitting on the fence.
I currently see this coming holiday season potentially as the 360's last big season. If the currently established library in tandem with the now very accessible price structuring doesn't draw in the mass consumer, it will never happen at all. Future soft releases will simply remain on roughly even parity with those on other platforms, so it's no longer the main selling point.
At best, the platform will see another $50 drop across the board ($150 Arcade/$250 60GB Pro/$350 120GB Elite) in 2009. Beyond that, it's simply paving the way for the next generation of consoles.
No doom for the platform, but moderate success and profit for the 360 over the lifetime of the console. That's the best case scenario. Good enough to justify an Xbox 3.
but then what would happen to xbox in 09? they cant possibly cut the price that year, unless they want to go out of business. but sony can cut the price of the ps3 like late 09. so it wont matter in the end.
