Smouldering console prompts evacuation
A Canadian family was forced to evacuate its home and call the fire brigade on Monday, after their Xbox console went up in smoke.
The family noticed the smell of burning plastic and smoke coming from the basement of their home in the Canadian town of Cochrane around 1300 local time on Monday.
When unable to locate the source of the pungent smoke, homeowner Cliff Chudleigh thought it best to turn off the power to the house, and evacuate the property.
The fire brigade was promptly summoned, and after searching the house, fire fighters confirmed that the source of the problem was the family’s malfunctioning Xbox console.
According to the local fire chief, the machine – which had been kept in a cupboard – had shorted, causing the problem.
“There was no actual flame, it looked like an electrical short,” Cochrane Fire/EMS station officer Gran MacKinnon confirmed.
“The fire fighters let the smoke out and the problem was solved.”
MacKinnon added that you should “unplug your electric stuff when you are not home.” Although given the amount of heat both the original Xbox and the 360 are capable of producing, not keeping them in a cupboard is probably a good idea as well.
Still, apart from one fried console, it seems that all is fine and dandy on this occasion, which is the main thing.
