Forums - General - microwaving food is not the same as cooking

Me and my cavemen friend (shout out to Oog!) say unless you're using an open flame, and you have some meat roasting on a spit, then technically you're not cooking. I have to take Oog's side on this one. You people and your modern range ovens don't know what real cooking is!

Your just wrong.

Heating up the food will also 'cook' it over time. After all, what do you think happens in that pan on the stove?

Holy crap you know Oog?!?!  He is a pretty swell guy I think.  He made me a whole boar once, it was fantastic.

Cooking food with a microwave, psssh.

I came in here expecting a serious discussion of how microwaves don't cook food by applying heat, but by vibrating the water molecules, which has adverse effects on the food.

But what I got was some good lulz.

Poor Commando.

The last time I used a microwave was in December. Haven't turned one on this year! I feel great. On December 16th I made a TV dinner sandwich.

That looks disghusting. Did you actually eat that?

What do you call making a salad, sandwhich, or even something like steak carpaccio? No stove, heat, or anything like that there.

Also, what about microwave meals where you add butter or water?

You prepare a salad... and I don't know what steak carpaccio is but surely you need to cook the steak in some way? (or does carpaccio mean raw steak?)

It is true that in a microwave the food does cook, but I suspect she means the other definition of cook in that to be a cook (proffession) you have make the food by mixing ingredients.

Personally I only use the microwave for defrosting things... usually bread, or occasionally if we had some left over lasagne or something I will heat it in the microwave for the day afters lunch.

You take a thin slice of raw steak, place plastic wrap over it, lightly pound it with a hammer, drizzle a little oil over it, maybe some pepper.  Done.

What about steaming food in the microwave. Does that count as cooking? I get my raw fish and vegetables and place them in a special steaming plastic, and when it comes out the fish is cooked and the vegetables are hot and soft. I have had to add ingredients and cook them, and ironically my meal will be healthier and tastier than most things you cook on a stove with fire by adding oil. So unfortunately i would have to disagree.
(Yes i have a steamer too, but after experimenting, the difference is minimal between steaming in a steamer, stove or a microwave)

I know microwaving isn't cooking because I'm able to microwave stuff without almost burning my place of residence to the ground. Did you guys know that cookie sheets melt if you put them on a stovetop? I do now.

...

Yes, you are right. It is not the same.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S.
