WOW...this is breaking news!....LOL...Nice job to VG CHartz to land this exclusive news...and for all the HEAT they received from Sony Fanboys in BLASTING them over reporting on it first...lol...boy-o-boy, some people are EATING that humble piece at this point.
With regard to the price cut, it’s a brilliant move by Microsoft. The fact of the matter is this, LAST holiday season, a lot of the very people hating on M$ price cut now, stated that they expected a cut soon, and earlier this year (Jan-March timeframe) almost all expected the cuts to happen! M$ didn’t cut prices, and while sales haven’t seen the growth of PS3 or Wii, they CERTIANLY haven’t lagged or fallen, and have instead been MORE than the previous year’s sales. Therefore, M$ kept the console’s prices steady, made money, and waiting for production price reductions boost to power the price reduction, rather than cutting prices just to make a sales dent. There will a serious sales boost this holiday season for the 360 in NA, and it’s probably going to challenge Wii, which would have been unthinkable before. A $199 Xbox 360 is a far greater value than the Wii, imho, since you get XBL Silver whereas Wii has…The $299 Xbox 360 is a far better value over a comparable PS3 imho as well as the $399 360. For those 20GB buyers of the reduced priced 360, M$ would be smart to provide a $20-30 game coupon ala Apple with the I-phone. This will boost game sales, while provide the some relief for some buyer’s remorse…and a perfect pitch for the upcoming slew of big titles in the clunker for 360.
The fact is that M$ doesn’t have to win the console war, they just have to be competitive and on track for profitability, which they already have reached. As Microsoft Game Studios gains more robust experience and depth (Notice the boosting on in-house staff to with Yu’s hire), you can expect that there WILL be exclusives for 360. They have the money and experience in software to develop games galore, so it’s just making sure there is a vehicle to drive this growth. Nintendo is making a KILLING off first party software, and I think M$ see that’s as being critical to it’s gaming growth…YES…keep supporting partnerships with developers and publishers, but you run the risk of the Mass Effect effect…that’s a no-no. Brilliant move by M$, and in 3-4 months, we will know just how brilliant it truly was.
