Forums - Gaming - Was the SNES vs GENESIS battle the most heated one ever?

Around the Network

In terms of sales, indubitably it was the most heated. In terms of fighting amongst the fans of the different brands, not even. Before the PS2 era, about the worst you saw was an occasional schoolyard fight (and pretty much everybody not part of the fight thought it was stupid to get into fisticuffs over a video game system). While Sega took potshots at Nintendo in their ads, the two rarely got into PR spin battles of the scale witnessed in this generation.

Something changed around the PS2 era, however. Suddenly there were a lot more insults getting flung around, a lot more fights were breaking out (online especially, offline only a bit more), and a lot more PR spins were being made. Funnily enough, most of said PR spins were coming out of (and still come out of) Microsoft and Sony. And most of the fights were getting started by Sony or MS fans, too. Not to say anything against the fanbase at large, just that their, ah, most devoted supporters tend to turn to fighting words and actions a lot.

Glad the Genesis won that Gen.

Why must you speak lies sega4life, the snes sold 49 million and genesis sold 29 million. Last time i checked 49 was bigger than 29 (unless u invented some type of new math and in that case, toucher)

The SNES/Genesis console war is the only true one that ever took place, and even then only in America. (SNES crushed the Megadrive in Japan, and it in turn did much better than SNES in Europe.) Furthermore, it only happened at all due to very odd circumstances, mostly notably the SNES coming out a full two years after the Genesis(!) I don't think you'd ever see something like that happen nowadays.

There definitely were a lot of awesome games produced by both sides, and it was a good time to be a gamer. And the 16-bit console war was a LOT more intense than the current one, with aggressive advertising and censorship issues going all the way to the US Congress. (The current "war" is a total farce, as the Wii is a runaway success while PS360 share 90% of the same library. What's at stake there?) But it was definitely a pyrric generation for Nintendo and Sega, as both damaged themselves very badly and cleared the way for Sony to enter the market.

I don't agree that the fans were less intense back then. What takes more courage: screaming profanities anonymously on the Internet, or telling people off in real life? I can't even tell you how many SNES vs. Genesis shouting matches there were in my school 15 years ago... Not to mention, there was no Internet, so you had to get your info from print magazines back then. You should have seen the arguments that a new Gamepro preview would produce!

Exactly, these young wipper snappers don't have any idea. I have yet to see any internet argument come to blows. You had Ninty going all out with its under handed tactics and Sega going crazy with its direct assault on Ninty's monopoly. I've haven't seen the same fire in any of the following console generations.

Man did I dis mario back in the day every chance I had...I hated that fat plumber. I hated whole of nintendo actually. Sega was my weapon of choice obviously and as I lived in Europe at the time, I was the majority.

I only became a super nintendo fan in 1995 when I moved to Canada and after I played Killer instinct, super metroid and Zelda...

I still hate mario tho...that fat f***

the megadrive was a lot more powerful then the snes and thats all what matters

Delusional much? The Genesis had a faster processor (best and generally only shown in Sonic games), but the SNES was overall more powerful in every other category, even it's slower CPU was more powerful.  Hell, the Genesis' sound was barely better than the original NES.

They were both still awesome, though.  I remember playing Uniracers and laughing my ass off the first time I saw the game slow to "hedgehog speed."

Wish they'd make a new one of those....

Speaking of Uniracers, when you entered the name "Sega" or "Sonic", the game would tell you that these names are "not cool enough".

Really?  I played that game a fair bit, but had no idea--that's awesome!

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
