Forums - Microsoft - 360 price cuts might be needed to combat "stagnant demand"

not drop the price $200.  I think this has been discussed many times.  They dropped the price of the 60 gig $100 to $500.  They introduced a brand new sku with significant cost savings at $400.  It was a desperate move at the time that has paid off with substainable sales growth.  The MS price cuts in Europe offered some initial sales increases, but have slumped back to pre-cut levels.

In other words, they lowered the barrier of entry from 600$ to 400$. That's a price cut.

I hope you are not in sales and marketing.

That's why I have the priviledge to call things what they are =)

What he said. I know it was a new SKU and im sorry if the phrasing was misleading or whatever. Also Dbot you did basically say a clearance sale was a price drop in America this year even tho it was temporary. Either way the PS3 became a lot cheaper to buy no matter what you call it. You can call the move whatever you want.

If we are going to follow this logic, the PS3 launched with a 20 gig at $500 and a 60 gig at $600.  After the $100 price cut we had 3 sku's priced at $400, $500, and $600.  So to follow Bitmap Frogs unusual logic the barrier to entry was lowered by $100 not $200.  Clear?

None of this has anything to do with Microsoft's current situation.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Well most ppl on here call it a 200$ price drop and its generally accepted. It's much easier to type that then "introduced a new SKU that is simlar to the original at 200 USD less." Terminology is irrelevant to the topic at hand. Im going back to college to get a bachelor's in Marketing to go along with my masters in Engineering. So I like talking about the sales and strategies as long as its civil and reasonable. Theres no point in talking about it if someones going to come in here and say "lawl 360 RROD" or "delaystation" etc etc

and if they finish 3rd, but are making a profit on thier business model and software sales, the ONLY thing that 3rd place finish would accomplish would be to make some folks, feel better/worse about thier purchase on message boards...nothing else. AND if MS improves thier market share, vis-a-vis last generation, they will consider this a SUCCESS, 3rd place or no

I agree 100% with this.

Since all the Wii does is extend its lead over the HD systems, what I´m curious about is whether or not the PS3 will be able to surpass the 360´s worldwide install base before 2010....what do you think, TRios?

The Wii is another beast altogether, it's appeal is crazy broad.  I mean folks I know who would never even think of owning a console have expressed a desire or already own a Wii.  Crazy!  ALSO for the record, don't own a Wii yet either :(  I imagine that will come sooner rather than later though.  As the boy grows older I think it'd be easier to share with him.  Totally off topic, sorry.

To your question; I think that all things being equal, no it would not.  The difference between the two is decreasing but at a constant level, rather...the difference is currently not decreasing at an increasing level, if you follow me.  That being said the current numbers do not suggest that when added up over the next 15 months or so that the PS3 would catch the 360.

Clearly however all things are NOT equal.  Two factors I think dictate how soon they are equal: 1) how big of an effect the price drop has in the Americas and to a lesser extent Others/Japan and 2) if the MS price drop affect is significant, how long it takes Sony to respond with a drop of their own (to even the playing field) so to speak.  By January next year, I think this picture is MUCH clearer.

As a side note, I think any PS3 fan who DOESN'T own a PS3 yet, should hope for a big spike in MS sales due to this cut.  That is the ONLY way Sony will be forced to lower thier prices anytime soon.  Thanks for asking by the way, obviously as I'm not paid for this...I reserve the right to be completely wrong! HAHA.

Launch price of the PS3 was $500.  That price was lowered to $400.  How much of a price cut is that?  We don't need to discuss the fact that it is essentially a different product.

Well instead of answering my reply some 10 posts ago you decided to correct an irrelevant piece of terminology that everyone on this site has said/seen b/f and hasnt cared about. All of this happening after you said the clearance sale in America was a price cut this year. You can continue debating this to yourself.

x360 arcade - 200 euro.
x360 60GB - 270 euro.
x260 elite - 370 euro.

ps3 80GB - 400 euro.

But in USA... In usa, x360 20GB model went to 300$ price, and still was outsold by PS3.
It`s hard to believe, that people wait so much for 60GB model for 300$.

Well, time will show. Maybe x360 is running out of M$ fanboys, first xbox sold only 24 mln. =))

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Guess Microsoft is willing to do everything to beat Sony this time.

What??????? its about time for a price cut, they are three years into the lifecycle and will still make money on the console.  MS needs to be profitable also.

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

I don't think anyone really believes that the PS3 has, or will have less demand than the 360.

Even at almost double the price the PS3 is outselling the 360 in all regions, and that's not because the PS3 is better but it has the PlayStation brand.

I think that the 360 is a worthy competitor, but one that was gonna lose from the beginning.

Of course, we as gamers shouldn't care about their sales since Microsoft and the 3rd parties keep flooding the 360 with amazing titles.

No, the PS3 console is better no doubt, better hardware at least. That plus the Playstation Brand is probably to blame for the 360's under perfoming sales.

Now many regard their libraries of games as equal as well, and the forseable future for most says that the PS3 holds more crucial exclusives. These are the things that drive the industry towards the PS3.

How can you say the libraries are equal when MS has been out for a year longer and has a much richer library of games

I'm not sure that I understand what you are trying to say (NOT trying to flame you); are you suggesting that MS should NOT lower the price of the box, or simply that lowering the price of the box will have no affect?

Clearly, recent sales history have shown that in "Others" the demand for the PS3 is far ahead of the 360. The demand for both is tepid in Japan, though again the PS3 has seen larger demand their as well. Demand in the Americas has been pretty close and I expect that the price cut here WILL affect that.

What I don't understand then is, what is MS to do? Maybe stop producing the box because demand world wide is less than the PS3? In my opinion, they are simply responding to a changing market place, just as Sony did when demand for the PS3 was lagging.

I can understand that some folks don't want MS to succeed; heck I owned all three systems last gen and wont pretend that I didn't have a favorite. I just wonder, if you were in charge of the 360 product line - what would your strategy include, if not lowering prices?

Yeah especially since it has been out three years and they can afford too.  Lowering price gets more sales, more slaes build brand recognition.
