Forums - Sony - Why only 80GB??

This just seems plain dumb.  They should have gone at least 120GB.  60GB more plus a games might actually be worth $100.  I can't see this outselling the 60GB version at the current pricepoints.

It will be sold out I predict the limited edition will be sold out in 1 week, just like the 360 elite. Besides you can always upgrade it to 200gigs.

True, but then I would definitely go with the 60GB if I was going to upgrade the harddrive anyways.

honestly i think it was because they are being cheap... and are trying to make more of a profit off of the 80 gig..but people arent dumb so thats not gonna happen.. many people will seek out the 60 gig. which will eventually phase out the 80 gig or lower the cost of both the 60 and and 80...

My guess is the 60 gb will be phased out, just like the 20 gb was, and once the stock of the 60 gb clears, the 80 gb will be the only one left.

Because of how complicated Hard-Drives really are they have strict limitations on how inexpensive they become. I suspect at this point in time the price difference for Sony to include a 80GB hard-drive over a 60GB hard-drive was tiny whereas to jump to 120GB (or 180GB) would have cost a lot more.

If some of the theories are correct, Sony may have reduced the price of the 60GB model because they have 4 to 6 Million unsold 60GB PS3 systems and they are currently producing 80GB systems; this would imply that they are trying to (rapidly) sell off unsold inventory in order to make room for their larger model.

i think they will eventually phase out the 60 gig.or produce 60 gigs with no EE's like PAL.territories. but i dont think they are gonna go back up in price.. (example if they phase out the 60 gig the 80 will go down to 499 or more..

People will seek out the 80gig more than 60gig atleast here in the U.S because they arent so smart. When the elite came out firends of mine in my classes kept saying the elite will have better graphcis etc..typical fanboy stuff. The elite was the same thing and they dont believe you if you say you can always upgrade the ps3 HDD. What Im trying to say it that since it brings a game, and god knows if they release the new controller with the bundle, it well sell out or atleast be bought more than the 60gig. Sony can always release the bundle now but they want the 100 dollar price cut to take effect before casual gamers know about the new 80gig model.

Probably the 80 gb is the most cost effective, anything bigger would cut into their production cost cutting.
