| stof said: So far, there are two stories surrounding Sarah Palin which have importance. The first is the ongoing investigation as to whether she requested Alaska's public safety commissioner to fire Palin's state trooper brother in law and then dismissed him after he refused. The second is her high school daughter's pregnancy. The first is important because if true, she abused power and broke the law... She'd be completely fucked. The second is important, not because it says something about Sarah or her daughter, but because it illustrates the folly of abstinence only education (the part about how it doesn't work at all), which is not an illustration you want coming from the daughter of a Vice Presidential candidate who's a proponent of abstinence only education. That is all. |
@bold,
How exactly would that be against the law? Unethical certainly, but I don't think it actually breaks any laws, does it?
Anyways, in the interest of full disclosure it is only fair to mention that this is the same brother in law who has allegedly been found drinking in his squad car (I believe on duty, but not 100% sure if that was part of the allegation), making death threats against Palin's father, and using his tazer on her nephew. If even one of those things is true the story isn't going to matter in the court of public opinion.
Either way, more information needs to develop before anyone should legitimately be reaching a final conclusion on that case. I believe the inquiry into the matter will be finished sometime in late October iirc, so we should have quite a bit more info to make a factual determination then.
Now on the other issue, if you want to make a case against abstinence only policies then you can do it with studies and facts, not with anecdotes. I would hope that people on this site of all places understand that a single anecdote has about as much meaning as Amazon.com sales rankings do on the weekly sales numbers. The only reason it is being made into an issue is because it is easily sensationalized into a slogan. Using this case to make the point is an invalid argument on an intellectual level and a shameful exploitation of a young woman on an ethical level.
If the argument against abstinence only policies has merit (as I personally believe it does) then it can be validated without exploiting someone. At some point people need to stop and give consideration to what effect this actually has on Bristol and even the child once it is born, I'm not simply attempting to be melodramatic by calling this an exploitation..it truly is an exploitation of their personal lives to advance a political agenda with no regard for the impact on them.
Frankly I think the whole thing is fairly petty, but hey that is politics as usual. Sadly even if Obama is ready to move away from "the same old politics as usual", the majority of the media and pundits clearly are not.
That's funny, the 2 things that bother me about Sarah Palin are her sleazy politics and her hypocrisy.
OH SNAP HE DIDN'T!
@Sqrl, well then, if the guy is a drunk who drinks in his squad car and tazered her nephew and whatnot, then why didn't he get fired before the divorce?
Earlier today Obama was asked what he thought about Palin's daughter being pregnant. A rude and pointless question but Obama clearly said, and very sternly almost like he was angry about being asked the question, "We do not attack families in politics, this is not how the transfer of power should be conducted in this government. Attacks like this are extremely irrelevant and in no way reflect upon any of the candidates as to how they would run the country." Mind you im quoting this from memory as it was on the local news.
Now im not a huge Obama fan but there are a lot of things he could have said that were all PC but the attitude that he showed when answering the question got a lot of respect from me. As always when I vote I dont give a damn what the past is, I care about what each candidate can do in office. McCain is a war hero: kudos but don't care. Obama is a suspected terrorist: bullshit and I dont care.

Did you bother to read what I wrote? Read it again, then respond. I quite clearly called them allegations and pointed out the need for more information. Jumping to conclusions about what I've wrote and then asking me to defend them is not a platform for a reasoned debate.
Perhaps with a timeline of events as they are alleged, and an understanding of what went on behind the scenes of any possible charges or IA investigations into those charges I could answer that question. But without those things I would be taking a stab in the dark, as would you.

Yes I read what you wrote.
Okay, I read it again. Nothing changed.
Oh crap, the post I'm quoting just doubled in size within the time I was reading your last post and hit Quote.
I said "if" and was asking a hypothetical. If somebody's drunk on the job, you fire them before there's family drama. If they're not drunk on the job, you don't make up a bunch of crap after there's family drama. I don't know what happened, but the other guy they fired says they called him 24 times to pressure him to fire Wooten, and Palin's husband has already admitted to pressuring the guy to fire Wooten. I'll just leave it at this: "It's fishy as hell." I'll reserve judgment beyond how fishy it is until October, unless there's a big break in the case and more shit hits the fan.
And since McCain didn't vet her at all, he didn't know she had a private lawyer to defend her during the investigation.
The investigation is due to file their report on October 31st. It's like McCain picked the candidate based on the biggest surprise right before we vote. Or it's like he said, he just had a gut feeling that she was his soul mate.
So how about that dirty seperatist rumour?
I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.
