Well to day is the 100th day of using Wii Fit for me. I figured I post a quick thought or two based on extended use of it. For the most part (+90%), I've used the Yoga portion, with a little of the strength training.
Good Points:
- I have used it consistently, and it definitely made a difference for me in terms of overall muscle tone. I've always done other exercise (jogging/kayaking/skating), but after about a month I could tell a difference by having added in the Yoga daily.
- there is a fair range of stretch exercises that affect a lot of different muscle areas. A side effect of this is that not all of the activities/exercises in Wii Fit use the balance board: some use the Wii-mote (some Strength Training/Aerobic), and some use nothing at all (later Yoga exercises).
- in terms of effective use of the balance board, the slider bar used in Lunge/Triangle/Warrior gives an actual feel of usefulness.
Overall, I haven't been concerned at getting a high score with the activities, my biggest gain has been able to do this at my own pace and timing without irritating an instructor or becoming irritated myself.
Bad points:
- there is a fair bit of wasted time betwen activities, especially after the activity. Ideally, there should be a "programmer" function that allows you to layout what you want to do, and perform them in succession without the score or commentary at the end.
- unlocking requirements. Even after using it all this time (and today I broke ten hours, so my piggy bank turned gold, reminded me of SNES Sim City...), there are still three strength training activities locked. I was on holidays for a few weeks earlier on this summer, and my niece and myself aggressively hit the four sections and the activities unlocked pretty quickly, even amongst the ones I haven't unlocked myself. I don't want to dance or sit on my arse watching candles in order to get better use of the sections I will probably like.
Interesting points:
- as I mentioned earlier, some of the Yoga exercises do not require the balance board, but they recommend performing them on a softer surface, like a yoga mat. I think a Yoga package fr the 360 or PS3 including a Yoga mat, along with "recognizing bands" or something that would allow their webcams to gauge the Yoga would be fantastic.
- I still cannot touch my toes consistently. Only on a good day, and say, late in the afternoon.
- I tried the Marble round in the games last night and got to thinking that the balance board is more of a variation on PS3 Six-axis than anything else. The relative successes of the two make me smirk.
Anyway, I have defnitely got good use from Wii Fit Yoga, and suspect I will continue to do so. Peter Moore, bring n the EA Exercise Package!!!!
