I have an external HDD set up on my network, and I was wondering how I could try and pick this up on my PS3, or do I have to stream via a computer (if so what programmes would you recommend?)

Not quite, that relies on the PS3 being connected to the HDD, though they are slightly wrong in saying that you have to put stuff in the name files, you can just search for it manually

i don't know what it is exactly (google it). but its how the ps3 communicates with media servers. can your 360 detect it?
