Forums - Sony - Who else thinks Sony needs to kill the PS2?

once the ps2 has spent its 10 years on the market sony will can it, perhaps if its still selling well they will let it live longer. the ps2 doesnt hurt sony... it may restrict ps3 sales, but that in itself is good for sony..

just as an example lets say that 50 % of everyone that would have bought a ps3 bought a ps2 instead...

100 people buy sony brand...
50 ps2
50 ps3
---
profits from ps2 sales lets say 100 bucks on each.. loss on each ps3 sale lets say 100 bucks...
ps2 profits equal 50,000
ps3 loss equal 50,000

total profits for sony .....000
now lets compare that to a ps3 only model.
100 ps3 sold....
100,000 bucks lost for sony.

I could be wrong, but I think that the people who are continuing to support the PS2 have demonstrated that their values are drastically different from what Sony focused on with the PS3 and it's likely that "Killing" the PS2 wouldn't benefit the PS3 at all ...

It is highly possible that 2/3 of people (or more) who have bought a PS2, or have been buying PS2 games, over the past 18 months would move towards the Wii if the PS2 was "Killed off"

But maybe 7 years or 6 years later these people will want to upgrade to nex-gen with a Ps3 (by then it will be cheap).....so isn't it a win/win situation for SONY

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

games are still in development for the ps2 such as the new fifas, pro evos and tiger woods. Cancelling all these projects would be a waste of money for sony

ps2 its even selling close the 360.
i don't think they will stop it

PS2 is where the balance in profit and losses come from. Take away the PS2 and the profit is gone, let the consumers decide when to drop the PS2, don't force it.

I'd like SONY to discontinue it anyways but it seems that Sony likes the 10 year plans nowadays the PS2 will be officially gone in two years.

A good idea Sony should have done was do what Nintendo did with the DS/GBA. Since the PSP and the PS2 are similar, Sony should have just allowed PS2 software development continue on the PSP. That way the PS2 would be no more, the PSP gets more software support and the PS3 can get it's act together buy forcing 120 million people to buy EITHER a PSP or PS3 and Sony can once again be on top.

Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)

Console that will sell most: Nintendo Wii U

Who will sell more consoles between Microsoft/SONY: SONY

They shouldn't the ps2 rocks.

I doubt that most of the new PS2 purchases are people buying their first PS2, and beyond that late adopters tend to favour the dominant console in a generation because it tends to have the largest library of great games (that tend to be budget priced by the time they buy the console).

wow people are really failing to acknowledge the PSP as a contributor to SONY profits...

@HappySquirel

Maybe you are correct.
