Forums - Sony - 5 active accounts limit for PSN games explained

Before I begin, I'll open with a quote from Jack Tretton on Wired Magazine's website (oct 2006) regarding game sharing:

WN: If downloadable games are tied to an account, what stops five people from sharing one account and all the games?

JT: Nothing, and I think that's a great advantage. You can send that content to four other friends for that initial investment. We want to get the game in as many hands as possible, and it's not about a financial grab [from] consumers.

It would appear that the 5 active accounts is not on a per game basis. Instead, you can only have 5 systems in total which have logged in and downloaded content under your name. Therefore, if one of your systems breaks down and they send you a refurbished one, you go down to 4 systems who can download content from your account. Including your new system, that leaves you with the possibility of only sharing with 3 other people.

I had originally thought that it was on a per game basis, so I could share Warhawk maps with 4 friends and Locoroco with 4 different friends, but that does not work.

Does anyone know if one of my friends removed my profile from his PS3 would that free up another sharing slot or is it forever used up?

Around the Network

Do you have experience? (do you know for sure?)

Assuming you are correct, how does that account for the fact that I lose the slot that my old 60GB despite the fact that it is probably refurbished and in someone else's living room right now? Shouldn't I have reclamed that slot?

EDIT: I wrote my questions before you edited yours. Yes, I'll use an alt account to download things next time I want to share them.

i have a feeling that once your account is opened, it will tie with the hardware number of that particular PS3. and your account can only tie with 5 PS3.

therefore, removing your profile from that particular PS3 is not going to help.

What do you mean deactivate in the account settings? I haven't delved deep into them enough to noticed liked accounts.

They should bloody well warn you to do that then when you send in your system to be serviced.

@PDF
can other people play your games after they deactivate your account from their PS3?
