Forums - Gaming - Casual vs Core vs Hardcore

i think the idea that onyxmeht had there is that hardcore type games often have more blood than others due to the fact that the learning curve's steepness requires a more mature mind, and that generally you can lump teenage-mature male gamers with sex/blood/violence.

i don't think they have to be sexualy explicit per se, but i think many hardcore games are.

so it's not a pre-req, but a coincidence.

You're defining all this by what you want them to be rather than anything solid.

at least, i don't think i am.... i asked for people to contribute in the op. what your opinion of any of these is just as relevant as anyone elses. i'm not just going to copy anything someone posts, but i think onyx has a point that hardcore games are generally more violent, sexual, mature theme-styled.

but i think the main point is the complexity of the game above all.

also i don't think challenge has much to do with it unless the challenge is complex. memorization, complex strategy. something like civ, or some mmo's.

Well most of those complex games aren't really explicit?

What about softcore games/gamers?!

And if the complex game isn't challenging how is it different than the casual game where "A game seeming or tending to be indifferent to what is happening; apathetic; unconcerne" ?

i'm sorry, go back and re-read the post i put before about where it wasn't a pre-req but a coincidence. i think either you just didn't understand what i said, or didn't read it.

how about this. instead of brazenly just stating the opposite of these thoughts, why don't you give me some examples?

i think your problem is that you think any casual game can be hardcore and any hardcore game can be casual.

i think the perfect example of that quote you just put down there is solitare; it has nothing to do with the times, it is simple, will not really challenge ideals, or alter your thought process.

 what complex game isn't challenging?

i dunno man, what is softcore? if it is different enough from casual, i'll add it to the list....

At the end of the day the distinction is:

Casual - popular games (its impossible to sell a huge amount of copies without having a high casual element.

Casual/Hardcore - games that have cross-over appeal (Halo, Mario, Zelda etc)

Hardcore - niche titles (Ninja Gaiden is the perfect example).

Any other definition just doesn't make sense. There's nothing hardcore about FPS or blood or mature themes. Sales reveal what is casual and hardcore, as certain games (like your GTAs, Halos and Marios) could not obtain their high sales without significant casual appeal. At the end of the day, when you want to know what game is casual or not the best place to look is the sales charts.
