Forums - Gaming - A hopeful call for a crackdown on viral marketing

This is really getting out of hand. Every time I come to this site, the front page's "latest topics" section is littered with obviously inciteful posts intended as flamebait like "I traded my Wii/PS3 for a 360", "Nintendo's greatest failings", "What Sony did wrong", "Why you should buy a 360", "(Wii/PS3 game) vs. (360 game)", and endless parades of so-called 'news stories' about how Sony is falling apart in spite of their continued market presence, or how Nintendo is somehow failing in spite of their success. I'm all for a fair forum, but there is a disproportionate amount of conflict being generated that always seems to somehow put Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PS3 down while boosting Microsoft's XBOX 360 up.

I'm sure some of it is unintentional, not meant to be viral marketing at all. But I'm also sure that some of it definitely is intended to drum up support for MS while beating down their competitors. There is simply too much pro-MS-anti-Sony-and-Nintendo posting going on to be realistic, particularly on a site that's regularly heralded as "pro-Nintendo" and "pro-Sony" (interestingly enough, given the aforementioned glut of pro-Microsoft posts) and I seem to see the same few posters keep posting the flamebait threads. We don't see these raging debates at all for the DS or PSP; few people around here seem interested in attacking them, even though most of the anti-Wii and anti-PS3 arguments could just as easily be applied to the DS and PSP, respectively.

So I'm asking my fellow forum posters who are also sick of this glut of endless cycles of argument and debate over topics that have been worn down to the point of repeating arguments ad naseum, let's crack down on these posts and put a stop to it. Call people out when they post another repeat of the same pointless nonsense arguments or when they try to start another heated argument over "why the Wii sucks" or "why the PS3 fails". Let's claim the site we love back from the people who think we're nothing more than easily manipulated sheep that will buy any line about how advantages for any company save Microsoft are weaknesses for all others hook, line, and sinker.

Huh?

That's the mods job isn't it - you should probably talk to the mods about updating the rules - those posts are getting out of hand, but I only view the forums here to laugh anyway - there are though now rarely some great opinions and marketable points but those have become too few and too far apart.

I suppose it is a job for the moderators, ultimately. But it would be nice if people who cared enough about seeing an end to the constant waves of viral marketing actually showed they cared. As it stands, there are no rules against viral marketing at VG Chartz that I'm aware of. And as long as nobody is willing to say or do anything about it, there won't be, either.

 DUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHH

If you have a problem with any post or thread, report it. No need to make some sort of VGChartz militia.

Heh, 100% agreement. The pro-MS group is definitely the smallest of the three on this site.

In any case, there are pro/con posts about all three consoles on a continual basis. Methinks someone is looking at the site through a filter.

Coincidence in that prior to this thread I was reading Bored4life's link to him disclosing merk66 I didn't make it to page 8 as none of it was funny. =.=

But you may misconstrew passion for marketing, I'm pretty sure you know about stigma; as the Wii's values continue to grow in numbers the stigma becomes much more pungent, like any aroma (the metaphor fits hurrah!) when one scent becomes overbaring there seems like no difference exists.

Gaming is for kids, so it's only rational that gamers act like kids.

Kids like things being one their terms, because that's the way they understand things.

Adults use that method to conjure articles like the one with the Kim Possible avatar posted... the purpose you already know also. (Yea I'm assuming your smarter than the average bear.)
