Forums - Sales - Price Cuts on Blu-ray Players at WalMart

I forgot to post this yesterday. Two Blu-ray players got price cuts.

The Magnavox branded player is now $279 down from $298.

The Sony branded player is no $289 down from $349.

Thats right folks, Blu-ray prices are dropping slowly. I have a feeling that prices will be below $250 for standard pricing by the end of the year and sales will have players between $170 - $220 for the holidays.

Nice. There goes the "blu-ray is still too expensive and isnt getting cheaper" arguement people use for why ps3 cant get a price cut.

Now people won't need to buy Ps3s as Blu-Ray players?

the PS3 is still the better deal but yet if people dont want to be able to play video games as well as Blu-ray movies it is cheaper for them to buy a stand alone player.

Realistically, the Blu-Ray drive in a stand-alone Blu-Ray player probably accounts for around 75% to 90% of the manufacturing costs associated with the product. In a device like the PS3 which includes an (relatively) expensive CPU, GPU, Memory, and Hard-drive (as well as tons of additional components not found in a Blu-Ray player) I would be surprised if the Blu-Ray drive accounted for more than 25% of the manufacturing cost of the PS3 today. If this drive costs $150 you can (easily) sell a stand alone Blu-Ray player for $300 with a massive profit, but this does not imply that the PS3 can be manufactured for less than $400.

May be a really big deal for the Christmas season. Electronics are always hot, and this will be Blu-ray's first un-opposed holiday season. Some big Summer hits will be hitting Blu-ray at just the right time.....

Look at the company who cut the prices and look at how much they did it by. This price cut pretty much says that blu-ray prices are lowering AND it shows the effect of the blu-ray laser being cheaper to make now (you know the part that's in the Ps3 that was reported in being cheaper)

You don't think that if a company is able to lower the price of their hardwar by 70 bucks that a good deal of that is in the ps3 too (made by same company)

You don't think that with smaller CPU/GPU/Heatsink/Fans the company could possiblt cut price?

Well, that is only one component of the entire peice and if it needs to be $250+ to make $$ then you need to add probably at least another $150 for the rest of the stuff and WHOA!!!!! right back at the current $400 price.

i.e. no price cut coming.

he doesnt understand the cost of aluminum heat pipes... the cooling system of the PS3 even with 3 pipes is still about $30. The original cooling system with 8 pipes was probably about $70.
