Forums - Gaming - In your opinion, were Square and Enix better before they merged?

I think they are slowly coming back around again that there is stiffer competition from others like BN, Nintendo, etc. Crisis Core was very well done and the FF4 remake was absolutely amazing (I actually think it's better than the original as a huge fan of FF4).

During the time of FF X-2 and Dirge of Cerberus, more was needed.

Youichi Wada must be the reason.  He was very furious that the designers were making games they wanted to make and not what the gamers wanted

Yes, but in general JRPGs were better before they merged.

I don't think the merger was the cause of the decline of the quality of their games, I think it has more to do with that fact that Sakaguchi left S-E as well as their other good game designers

Sakaguchi gets FAR too much credit.  He created the series, but he didn't even direct the most beloved FF's IIRC.  6, 7, 8 (the online forums are generally the public that hates FF8, don't get pulled into the herd/dogma), 10 and even Chrono Trigger were directed by Yoshinori Kitase.  If he did direct 6, 7, 8, 10 and Chrono Trigger they would have been unbelievably simple and linear.  I'm not saying there wasn't some linearity (is this a word? lol) in some of those games, but the linearness (...is this a word?) would have been greater if Sakaguchi directed them.

To me, it doesn't matter - HIRONOBU SAKAGUCHI BROUGHT US FINAL FANTASY regardless if he was involved with the later installments or not. Without him - would there have been such a compelling console RPG since Dragon Quest? And as far as i'm concerned - Square and Enix have been a RPG powerhouse since the 8-bit NES. SquareEnix were meant to be  together.

JRPGs have declined in quality after the merge of Square with Enix. This merger has been a bad move so far.

Nomura is doing that all the time.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

I think it was because of the CEO, Wada something, which made so many bad decisions for the company, focusing on remakes and FF spinoff, rather than new game and new IPs. And also focusing on HD consoles too much, which took 4-5 years to pump out a game, rather than the normal 2-3 years. Yeah bad management

of course.

^KH1 better in any way than 2? *laughs*

I agree completely. Kingdom Hearts is a bad game. Kingdom Hearts II is a fantastic one and better than KH1 in every possible way except in the opening theme

I personally loved both KH 1 and 2

I'm perfectly fine with that, I'm not saying that KH1 was a horrible uninspired mess (else I wouldn't love KH2), I'm saying that KH1 had too many problems:

-It had an awful camera, one of the worst I've ever seen. Fixed in KH2: You can control it with the right analog

-Awkward controls, I swear everytime Sora jumped I wanted to kill him. Fixed in KH2

-Bad party/Inventory management (lack of auto-refill, and general stupidity of Donald and Goofy). Fixed in KH2

-Unskippable cutscenes. Fixed in KH2

-Gummi Ship. Fixed in KH2

Then add to KH2 a more refined magic system, more depth (and fun) to the battle system, a great, more complex story (KH1 wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either), the Drive forms, and you got an excellent game. In many ways, KH2 is what KH1 should have been. Anyone who liked KH1, should love KH2. Anyone who didn't like KH1 for the reasons I stated should also love KH2

Same here. All those annoyances like the controls and camera angles were fixed in KH2. It also improved the gummi ship (way better and funner in KH2), and the battle system. Pretty easy to use. I hate that you only have to press triangle for the trigger commands. The characters and art style were better in KH2. Same with music, gameplay and story. The story is okay but it's still better than the first one. Kingdom Hearts 1 only stood out in Hollow Bastion, IMO. That was the best part of the game.

Square: Yes
Enix : Don't give a damn....

No love for Dragon Quest?

Well.. They did decline.

FF7 - FF10, KH and a little of KH 2, FFT, and Vagrant Story were the games I enjoyed the most IMO.

When Squaresoft became SE... Well... Kingdom Hearts 2 was Kingdom Hearts but a little bit easier than the first one.

And Final Fantasy 12 never became memorable to me. To be honest I was bored to death. Sometimes I wish FF12 was made more like the FF7 - FF9. Where they kept the quirky humor that you sometimes get.

Although FF10 had awesome gameplay but dialog sometimes kills the thing. I don't know if it was the way they "deliver the dialogue" or is it because "you can't imagine how they would say it."

Either way I miss the humor in FF games. But I wish they would make the gameplay enjoyable for the players or even the story a bit captivating.
